IEP Meetings, Don't Be Afraid

IEP Meetings, Don't Be Afraid
I wanted to somehow share with parents--especially of younger children with special needs--how and why they should not fear, and even more so, look forward to their child's IEP meeting. This meeting is one of the best places where you, as parents are able to advocate for your child. Too often, parents believe that they are their simply as "physical" representation for their child, and not an active voice. An IEP meeting is designed in many cases to develop your child's "Individualized Education Plan." Parents will often hear the word "recommendation," and that is exactly what the professionals are giving. If you do not agree, it's okay to say so. (For example, if a Physical Therapist recommends 2 one half hour sessions of therapy per week, and you think your child would benefit from more, speak up and say so, and explain why). Some parents I have spoken to in the past have felt that if they advocate for their child, services would actually be taken away from them! I think it is important for them to know that EVERYONE at that table is interested in what is best for your child. In fact, with regard to VCSD in particular, (and I have been in two districts since my child was diagnosed), the staff is incredibly supportive when the parent is an active, vocal and vested partner in their child's success.
