5th Grade Homework Guidelines

· What homework will be graded?
All homework assignments will be assessed and a majority of the homework assignments will be assigned a grade. The assignments that will not be given a grade will generally be those that are assigned when a concept or skill is introduced. New concepts are introduced everyday in Math. Therefore, Math homework is considered practice. Students will receive a completion grade for these assignments.

· What is a spelling contract?
A spelling contract is a group of assignments given out Monday to be completed, stapled together and turned in by Thursday. Thursday night’s homework is simply to study the word list.

· Is late work accepted?
Late work will be accepted, with a penalty of five points off for each day the assignment is late.  However, if I receive a note from a parent the day the assignment is due explaining the circumstances, I will not penalize the student for the assignment being turned in late.  If a student is absent, he or she will be given a proper allotment of time to complete and turn in the homework.

· How much help should I give to my student with homework?
I am very pleased that many of you are willing to help your children with homework. My “helping rule of thumb” is that you provide just enough assistance to get your student started and/or review what your student has completed. Help may be provided in the form of understanding directions, locating information, making a plan for writing, and completing a sample problem together.

· Daily use of agendas
Each student will be recording their homework in their agenda each day of school. We will review the homework at the end of each class as well as the end of the day. If a student does not have any homework in a subject, he or she should write “none” in the box of the subject he or she has no homework.
