Standards-Based Report Cards (SBRC) The following was taken from the San Diego Unified School District's website. For more information, please visit the following link: http://www.sandi.net/sbrc/ An Overview The San Diego Unified School District is now using a Standards-Based Report Card (SBRC) at the elementary level. This is an exciting step for our schools as we work towards ensuring that all students are successful at meeting grade-level standards. Standards describe what a student should know and be able to do at each grade level in all subjects, and this new report card is designed to give parents more and better information about how their children are progressing. On the report card, parents will learn whether or not their child is advanced—meaning that the child has exceeded the standards, proficient—meaning that the child has met grade-level standards, basic—meaning that the child is approaching the standards, or below basic—meaning that the child has not met the standards. The report card will also provide information on student work habits. Definitions of Proficiency Levels At the elementary level, there are three reporting periods. For the first two reporting periods, students are evaluated based on their progress toward end-of-year standards. In other words, students who receive a mark of “proficient” for the first and second grading periods are making consistent and adequate progress toward achieving end-of-year expectations. In the final reporting period, the report card marks reflect a student’s actual achievement of the cumulative skills, strategies, and concepts identified in the California frameworks and content standards. Proficiently levels are broadly defined as follows: Advanced: The student consistently exceeds standards as demonstrated by a body of evidence that shows depth of understanding and flexible application of grade-level concepts. Proficient: The student consistently meets standards as demonstrated by a body of evidence that shows independent understanding and application of grade-level concepts. Basic: The student occasionally meets standards as demonstrated by a body of evidence that shows incomplete/inconsistent understanding and application of grade-level concepts. Below Basic: The student rarely meets standards as demonstrated by a body of evidence that shows minimal understanding and application of grade-level concepts.
