WEEK 02-02 TO 02-12

ELA6C1 - a. Identifies and uses the eight basic parts of speech and demonstrates that words can be different parts of speech within a sentence.

 

iv. Identifies and uses verbs – action (transitive/intransitive), linking, and state-of-being.

viii. Identifies and uses conjunctions – coordinating, correlative, and common subordinating.

b. Recognizes basic parts of a sentence (subject, verb, direct object, indirect object, predicate noun, predicate adjective).

c. Identifies and writes simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, avoiding fragments and run-ons.

 

LAST WEEK, WE WORKED ON SENTENCE STRUCTURE -- IDENTIFYING DEPENDENT (SUBORDINATE CLAUSES) USING SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS AND RELATIVE PRONOUNS.  WE ALSO SPENT TIME ANALYZING, COMPARING AND CONTRASTING, AND WRITING THE DIFFERENT SENTENCE TYPES USING THE FORMULAS FOR EACH TYPE OF SENTENCE...

THIS WEEK, WE WILL CONTINUE OUR WORK WITH SENTENCE STRUCTURE AND REVIEW VERBS.  WE WILL ALSO DISCOVER HOW STATE-OF-BEING VERBS "LINK" TOGETHER PARTS OF THE SENTENCE (LINKING VERBS).  WE WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY:

TRANSITIVE VERBS

INTRANSITIVE VERBS

SOON, WE WILL BEGIN TO TIE THEM TOGETHER WITH DIRECT & INDIRECT OBJECTS AND PREDICATE NOMINATIVES & PREDICATE ADJECTIVES.

WE CONTINUE TO WORK ON OUR PORTFOLIO PROJECTS AS THIS IS AN ONGOING PROCESS.   THE NEXT TEN (10) REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE: FEBRUARY 1, 2010.
 
 
 
ELA6R1 - h. Responds to and explains the effects of sound, figurative language, and graphics in order to uncover meaning in literature:

Elements:

i. Sound (e.g., alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhyme scheme)
ii. Figurative language (i.e., simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification)

 
THIS WEEK WE CONTINUED OUR STUDY OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE.  THIS INCLUDES: METAPHOR, SIMILE, OXYMORONS, IDIOMS, SYMBOLS, PERSONIFICATION, HYPERBOLE, AND IMAGERY.
 

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD THIS WEEK?

  • Ask leading questions like:

            *What are the rules of the classroom?

            *What is your plan for organizing this week?

            *What do you believe will be your biggest challenge?

            *What is your plan for attacking the challenge?

            *What are main verbs and how do you recognize them in a

              sentence?

            *What are Action Verbs?

            *What determines the type of verb?

            *What are the State of Being Verbs?

            *What are Helping Verbs and how do they function?

            *How do you find the Simple Subject in a sentence?

            *What are the only parts of speech that can serve as the subject of

             of a sentence?

            *What is a Setting, and what are some of the things included as

            part of a Setting?

            *What is a Subject?

            *How do you make a subject compound?

            *What is a Coordinating Conjunction?  Can you list them?

            *What is a Noun?  What are the noun categories? How do you differentiate between them?

            *What is a Pronoun?  What are the types of Pronouns?

            *What makes a Simple Sentence?  What are the formulas?

            *How do you create the other forms of Personal Pronouns?

            *How do you differentiate between a Reflexive and an Intensive Pronoun?      

  • Continue to review terms and definitions. 
  • Use the STUDY PLAN!!!

CHECKPOINT FOR READING:  

Students have received the requirements for the Third Quarter Book Project.  The first Reading Log Is Due:  January 29, 2010 and the Project and second Reading Log are Due:   March 05, 2009! 

This time, the required genre is Biography or Autobiography.  The project must be completed using a book from one of these genres.

The deadline is right around the corner!  Please be sure you are reading and logging your pages every night!
