Announcements:

WEEK 8-11 T0 8-15

Students received the syllabus and their Grammar Workbooks.  They need to keep both of these in their 3-inch binder at all times.  If they are assigned homework, they should bring the whole binder home.  This way they have their notes at home while they are working on their homework.

They were given a copy of the 1st Quarter Book Project and their first Reading Logs.  The 1st Qtr. Book Project is due: October 3, 2008.  If you have questions about the reading requirements, please e-mail me.  I took them to the Media Center on Thursday, and Mr. Baxter gave them a wonderful orientation.  They were also given an opportunity to check out books.

We also began our study of grammar.  We started with Verbs - Action and State of Being Verbs (SOB's).  Please make sure that students have memorized the list of SOB's.

We took a quiz on Friday over the SOB Verbs. Please remember that tests are cumulative, so be sure that students know the information from the quiz.

WEEK 8-18 TO 8-22

Students started the week with more grammar.  This week we are working with Helping Verbs (HV) : Auxiliary Verbs

Students were given an acronym to help them remember the HV's, so please make sure they have committed them to memory.

We continued reading our group readaround novels, and on Friday we took a test over Helping Verbs.

WEEK 8-25 TO 8-29

Students started the week with a review of all grammar.  This week we are working on Independent Clauses and Fragments.

You can help your child by making sure they are clear of the requirements by which a clause is labeled as Independent.  You may do this by asking, "What are the requirements for an Independent Clause?"

We will continue to read our group novels.

WEEK 9-01 TO 9-05

This week we will continue to read our group novels.

For grammar:  This week we will continue with Independent Clauses / Simple Sentences and their formulas.  This will include: Compound Subjects, Compound verbs, and Conjunctions.

Mrs. Jones

CHECKPOINT FOR READING:  After this week, students have one more week before they are expected to take their first Accelerated Reader (AR) tests.  Please make sure they are reading every night, so that they will make the deadline.
