Tips for Managing your Student's Computer Use.

    1.  Supervision is always the key to wise computer use.  Please be aware of what your student is logged into on their computer - or your computer for that matter.  We do NOT recommend that your student works on their computer in their room - alone.  It is always good to have the computer use (home computer or school computer) limited to where they can be supervised.

    2.  Nix the chat rooms.  Even the most polite, successful student can be tempted to say things over cyberspace that they would not otherwise say to another student if face to face.

    3.  Limit time on the computer.  Too much computer time - according to research - can effect eye sight and slow social/emotional growth especially for adolescents.

Student led / Parent - Teacher Conferences

HERE ARE SOME HINTS ABOUT HOW TO PREPARE FOR PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES: Excerpts from "Get ready for Parent-Teacher Conference" (The Parent institute)

Conferences at Cody Middle School are "student led" conferences. Your student should be with you for these conferences. Before the conference:

Talk with your child about what they want you to know before the conference. Ask him/her what they think their teacher will say. Ask about what they like or dislike, problems or successes. Let your child know that after the conference you will discuss the meeting together.

Think about questions you'd like to ask the teacher. What is being covered in the class? What are homework expectations? How are my child's work habits? Does he/she read at grade level? Does my child get along with other students? What can I do at home to help my child be more successful?

What would you like the teacher to know ? What are your student's interests and hobbies and favorite subjects? Are there any medical concerns of which the the teachers should be aware? What might be happening at home that may affect school work --moving, divorce, birth of a child, illness in the family, etc.

Check out what resources are available and how to use them - such as how to check grades on-line, how to email teachers, how to contact the counselors, etc.

Follow up your conference with a conversation between you and your child about how it went. Get feedback and discuss the highlights. Ask if there is anything they would like to change for the next time.
