I have drastically revised 2nd quarter for English II and English II Pre-AP.  I have slightly revised 2nd quarter for English IV and AP English.

Students have a new copy of the calendar/syllabi, and I have updated the online homework calendar here.

I have also included the revised syllabi under my home page here.

We will still be covering the same material-- I just switched some 2nd and 3rd quarter assignments due to time constraints.

And PROGRESS REPORTS will go out Wednesday-Thursday.  I will also send home progress reports after the first major grade is due.  Please sign these progress reports so your student can return them to me.  I may also be writing emails/making calls about any concerns with student progress.

As always-- email me with any questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Kay Hill

The NYOS BIENNIAL TEXAS RENAISSANCE FIELD TRIP was a success-- thank you so much to all the parents that made it possible.  And thanks to all the students that were punctual and well-behaved.  I hope everyone had as much fun as I did!

Today was my first day in the classroom after a week-long absence, so I've made some adjustments to the calendar:

English II and Pre-AP II do NOT need to purchanse Prometheus Unbound--instead I have prepared a summaries/excerpts handout that I will distribute in class.  The Compare/Contrast Exam has also been postponed until further notice.
All English II and Pre-AP II students need to have finished reading Prometheus Bound and finish the packet of questions by Monday, November 2nd.  Students can earn 25-30 "book talk" pages for finishing the play outside of class. And students should still have a copy of Julius Caesar in class by Monday, November 9th.

AP English and English IV are continuing Hamlet.  They need to have finished Act 1 questions (answers need to include page numbers) by Monday, November 2nd.  AP also has a MC Practice due Monday.

Progress reports will also go out next week-- so I will be sending emails about lower grades and missing work soon.

As always-- email me with any questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Kay Hill

10/20/2009

Thanks to everyone who made it out to Student Showcases!  We will be evaluating what worked (some great student projects), and what didn't (schedule could be revised).

We are now unofficially beginning 2nd quarter.  English II and Pre-AP English will need a copy of Prometheus Bound by AESCHYLUS by Monday.  (If you find an anthology of Greek Tragedies or of plays by
AESCHYLUS that is fine.)  English IV and AP English will need a copy of Hamlet by Monday.  All classes are also beginning to work on an essay for a national writing competition (1st prize is $3000).  And AP is continuing to practice for the AP Exam in Spring.

I will be off campus Thursday-Tuesday (family semi-emergency that I need to attend to in Iowa).  I have acquired a sub that is certified in ELA, and she will have detailed materials to continue our original lesson plans.  Due to this circumstance, I may not be able to update the website until early November.

However, students did receive a calendar with 2nd quarter due dates (to keep in their binder),and we finished a Policy/Syllabi Quiz today in class (also kept in their binder) that includes all major due dates and reminders for the second quarter, so they should be well informed.

All classes have a writing assignment due this Friday.  There will be no other homework until I return.

I might also be unable to respond to email until I return.  So you may recieve an automatic "out of office reply."  I will answer all emails as soon as possible when I return.

I will be back in time for the Ren. Fest field trip on Wednesday, 10/28--which will be a lot of fun for everyone.

Thanks for your continued support,

Kay Hill

Welcome back everyone!  I hope everyone had a great break and is ready to get back to work...

My first day back in the classroom is Thursday (off campus for a training on Tuesday and PSAT Wednesday).  This week will be focused on being prepared for Monday's "Student Showcase".

PARENTS-- you should have received an email (through yahoo group) with some details on Monday's "Student Showcase". Parents may attend one of the two sessions offered (2-4 or 5-6:30).  During each session, your student will have a designated time for "The Gallery" (the Cafeteria) and a designated time for "Theatre District" (Bldg. C).  The Gallery will be a collection of student projects for parents to peruse at their leisure.  In The Theatre District parents will be the audience for ELA/History Skits and Presentations.  We can't wait to see you there!

With all of our prep/rehearsal for student showcase, we will unofficially begin 2nd quarter English on Tuesday 10/20.  Also at this time-- I will update the course syllabi and calendars on this website.

Until then-- get excited about Monday's "Student Showcase" :-)

The NYOS Biennial Texas Renaissance Festival Field Trip is set for Wednesday, October 28th.  Tickets have been ordered.  Thank you to the many parents that have volunteered to chaperone/car-pool.  We still need maybe 2 parents to help us car-pool.  It will be a lot of fun for students and parents!  I will send out more details when we return from fall break.

I  hope everyone is having a fun, safe, and restful break :-)

ALL CLASSES:  there are no more assignments due this quarter; there are no more opportunities to improve grades.  I am still grading papers and tests, and final grades will be available Wednesday.

Email with any questions or concerns.  Thanks,

Kay Hill

Quicknote:  I did change homework due dates on the calendar (to give students more time to produce quality work).  Please check the calendar for updated information.  Thanks,

Kay Hill

09/03/2009

I have made some changes to the English IV/AP English homework calendar.  Both classes need The Canterbury Tales (Geoffry Chaucer--modern translation thereof) for next week.

I will soon be updating the Pre-AP English calendar as well.  Those classes will need Incident at Vichy (Arthur Miller) for next week.

Have a nice long weekend!

Kay Hill

08/25/2009

Progress reports will be mailed out sometime later this week.

Parents/guardians of failing students have been/will be notified by the end of this week.

Most, if not all, student failing is due to missing work.  Remember that I only take late work twice each semester, and even then-- I only take it one day late.  If a student is absent-- then they are given more time to make-up work (different policy than late work).

Book talks are not due until September 18th.   I do include a "progress grade" at progress report time.  This "progress grade" shows how many pages out of 300 the student has successfully book-talked on so far.  Students can still earn 100% of their book talk credit by having all 700 pages completed by September 18th.  Students can book talk during my AM tutorials (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday AM), or they can sign up to do book talks in class on Fridays.  Please email me any questions/concerns about book talks-- I know it can be confusing until you get the hang of it.  That said-- book talks and SSReading have consistently proven to be successful tools to encourage and develop young readers in my classes.

Please continue to check the homework calendar for updates.  Be sure to select the appropriate class. (PreAP English II and English II will have different homework.)

It's been a great year so far.  From Beowulf to A Raisin in the Sun, from reflective essays to college application essays, we've been working hard.

Thanks,

Kay Hill

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

08/19/2009

More changes to some calendar/homework due dates:

  • Pre-AP has a Revision Page due Thursday, and a Final Draft due Monday; they also have a Vocab. Quiz Monday and need A Raisin in the Sun in class every day starting Monday.
  • English II has a Rough Draft due Friday and a Vocab. Quiz Monday.
  • AP has a PAPEr on "The Wanderer" due Friday, and many Beowulf quizzes and dialectical journals coming up tomorrow and beyond (see calendar).
  • English IV has a Revision Page due Friday, and a 2nd/Final Draft due Monday;  they will also have many Beowulf quizzes and dialectical journals coming up next Tuesday and beyond (see calendar).
And everyone has 300 Book Talk pages that will show up on progress reports next week, and a book project due Thursday 8/27As always-- email or call with any questions or concerns.  Thanks,

08/11/2009

Quick note:

I have changed the English II Pre-AP homework.  We did not have time this week to start our "Reflective Essays" properly, so the Rough Draft is not due Friday.  Instead, a 300 word "free-write" is due on Friday.  In my English class, a "free-write" means not only can you write on any topic, but you can let your ideas flow without punctuation or paragraphs.  I only look at content when grading a "free-write."

English II also has
a 300 word "free-write" due on Friday.

Both AP English and English IV have a rough draft of their "College Application Essay" due on Friday.

As always-- email or call with any questions or concerns.  Thanks,

Kay Hill

08/06/2009

I have updated each class's homework calendar to reflect all first quarter due dates.   But please note, these are subject to change-- so check back for adjustments.

Also remember that every student is responsible for keeping track of assignment due dates.  They are posted on the board and verbal reminders are given.

Tomorrow night is "Back to School" night.  Come visit our English classroom for information on homework expectations and an overview of what we will be reading and writing this quarter.

Hope to see you all then!

Welcome Back

I am so happy to be back at NYOS.  I am teaching 10th, some 11th, and 12th grade this year-- and what a great group of students!  I am excited about the year ahead.

Every student recieved a lot of handouts with a lot of information.  Please take the time to review this information-- it includes policies and assignments that will continue through this entire school year.

Please check the class supply list to ensure each student has all the materials they need.  Having a binder to hold handouts, readings and writings is very important.

I have updated the calendar to show upcoming homework assignments.  I will add assignments to the calendar-- so check back weekly.

The summer reading assignment is due tomorrow.  There is a personal poem due Monday.  And starting next week, there will be a writing assignment due every Friday.

As always-- email or call with any questions or concerns.  Thanks,

Kay Hill

05/27/2009

Only one week left!

The last homework assignment (Book Projects) for all classes is due tomorrow (Thursday). Book talks are due Friday, and otherwise all assignments are finished.

English Final Exams are Monday and as follows:
English II & PreAP English II: MC/Matching Poetry Test & Persuasive Writing Exam (fill-in outline)
AP English: Most students have/will have finished the College Board AP Practice Exam
English III: I-Search Poster & Final American Dream Discussion

And TAKS scores are in! Every 10th and 11th grade student passed English TAKS! 100% passing!
(Every student that had a test scored--some individuals did not have a test scored.)
Individual students have/will have received their individual English scores during class.

There have been many great accomplishments this year in English Language Arts. Many students improved in writing. Several students were commended on TAKS. We had almost a dozen students take the AP Language and Composition exam (twice as many as last year). I am very proud of the great work that our students have done this year.

And thank you all (parents and students alike) for all your support.

Now we will have our annual kickball tournament next Wednesday (you know--the one where the seniors always get beat by the teachers due to their superior athletic abilities)-- and then SUMMER BREAK :-)

Kay Hill

This is TAKS week. Today (Monday) is a regular day, and all classes have a book project due. On Tuesday, 10th grade has Math TAKS and 11th grade will be watching a historical film and going to Einstein's for lunch with Ms. Lindbom and myself. Wednesday is Math TAKS for 11th grade and a 10th grade field trip. Thursday is Science TAKS, and Friday is Social Studies TAKS.

There are no other assignments due this week (due to testing). However, there are assignments due Monday 5/4. Students were give ample time to do these assignments before this week--but I wanted them to have this next weekend if they needed extra time to finish.

There are no book talks and therefore no book talk pages assigned this week. However, students have the option of earning book talk pages by reading pages from their class novel if time permits.

Progress reports have also been sent. I will be contacting parents this week if their student is in danger of failing.

And continue to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you,

Kay Hill

ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS

YOU are responsible for having typed work printed BEFORE you come to school on the day it is due.

I CANNOT be responsible for the computer, printer, toner or paper that is required to print your work.

I do allow students to print using our classroom's student computers and our hallway printer. HOWEVER, these are not always reliable. And we sometimes face a toner or paper shortage.

The best thing to do: FIND A WAY TO PRINT BEFORE YOU GET TO SCHOOL.

Yes-- printers at home may be unreliable as well. Then it is YOUR responsibility to go to a library or Kinko's or wherever you need to go to print your work.

If your work is not printed when you arrive to class-- it is LATE and it will not be accepted without a late slip. (And as per my late policy-- work is only accepted one day late and late work is only accepted twice each semester.)

PARENTS: I will be asking every student to bring a ream of paper as part of their school supplies at the beginning of next year. This paper will cover the handouts that we use in class. (We do not use a textbook-- we create a class binder with materials added throughout the year.)

If anyone is able to send a ream of copy paper this quarter (to help finish out our year's handouts), this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Kay Hill

04/13/2009

I have updated both the "Homework" calendar for each class, and the "Current Assignment Handouts."
Below are some specific updates for each class:

ENGLISH II

We are continuing a unit on Persuasion-- there is a "300 word" persuasive essay due Friday.

Review the PPTs that we covered in class, and refer to your Persuasive Planning Guide as well.

You will need your copy of The Lord of the Flies by Monday.

PRE-AP ENGLISH II

We are continuing a unit on Persuasion-- there is a "300 word" persuasive essay due Friday.

Review the PPTs that we covered in class, and refer to your Persuasive Planning Guide as well.

You will need your copy of The Lord of the Flies by this Thursday. And in a couple weeks, you will need your copy of Of Mice and Men as well.

AP ENGLISH

We are finishing a unit on AP Test Practice/strategy-- your 3 PAPErs are due Wednesday (your answers to student created prompts). We will then score/tally this latest Practice Exam score.

We are then moving on to Bless Me Ultima Lit. Circles. Chapters 1-4 are due Monday. See your calendar and the "BMU Lit. Circles" handout.

ENGLISH III

We are continuing a unit on I-Search/Research-- your 6 Research Questions are due Thursday.

And your 6 source cards are due Monday.

There are many handouts/information related to our "I-Search/Research" project that you can refer to. There are also many resources on MLA etc.

And it is always the student's responsibility to check the "Assignments Due" board in class on a daily basis.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you,

Kay Hill

04/02/2009

Welcome Back! I have updated the calendar under "homework" to reflect upcoming due dates. AP English does have homework due Friday. All other English classes have homework due Monday.

I also updated the "Current Assignment Handouts" to include the assignment(s) we are currently working on.

Remember most homework is on a consistent schedule (writing due Fridays, Bk. Projects due at the end of the month, and 100 pages of reading every week due at the end of the quarter).

And it is always the student's responsibility to check the "Assignments Due" board in class on a daily basis.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you,

Kay Hill

Spring Break is almost over, and 4th quarter is almost upon us. I look forward to seeing you all on Monday. I hope everyone had a relaxing, restful, and fun spring break. I will begin updating our classroom website as soon as we begin some new units and lessons. We are going to begin with a review of MLA documentation, and this time we are going to master it! Otherwise, check your class syllabus (under the Home Page). See you soon :-)

Mrs. Hill

03/03/2009

ELA TAKS testing
went smoothly -- good luck to everyone that put forth their best effort today! We will not see results until late spring (close to when school lets out).

The end of the quarter is near. All classes have turned in the final project and will be presenting these projects for the next week. Book talks are also due this Friday. There are no other assignments due this quarter.

Otherwise-- I am busy trying to grade all the projects and papers that have been turned in recently. Students should know their final grades before they leave for Spring Break.

"Course Request Sheets" are also due this Thursday. Students may turn these in directly to me.

I will be contacting some parents/students to discuss their AP vs. Regular English choice. Please email me if you have any further questions.

Thanks,

Kay Hill

Just a note: If you need help with MLA and your "Works Cited" page, there are two resources on this website. First-- under "Handouts" look for the "MLA Guide." Second-- under "Links" look for the website link to easybib.com.

Every class has a book project due Friday. I will not be here, but you know where to turn them in; they will be late Monday. See my late work policy.

Every class has a presentation due Monday
. I will not be on campus on Thursday or Friday, but every class will have access to computers to complete these presentations that we already began together in class.

Please email any questions or concerns. Thank you,

Mrs. Hill

02/17/2009

I have been asked to attend an important training off-campus on Thursday 2/26 and Friday 2/27. Because this will dramatically affect book talks--
only 650 pages are due 3/6 for Book Talks. Students that already have 800+ pages: any and all extra pages will count towards your 4th quarter book talk pages. Book Talks during the week of 3/6 will still be limited to 100 pages.

All classes have major assignments due next week:

English II/Pre-AP: POETRY TEST MONDAY
AP English: SYNTHESIS ESSAY DUE MONDAY
English III:
SYNTHESIS ESSAY DUE TUESDAY

All classes have SPIRALS DUE MONDAY.

All classes have BK. PROJECTS DUE FRIDAY 02/27.

All classes have PRESENTATIONS DUE MONDAY 3/2.

And 10th - 11th grades have ELA TAKS EXAMS on TUESDAY 3/3.

Please continue to check "classroom news" and the "homework" calendar on this website. Also be sure to pay attention to information in class (PowerPoints and whiteboards and verbal reminders).

As always, please call or email with any questions or concerns. Thank you,

Kay Hill

AP English and English III are beginning their American Dream Projects.

AP English will finish The Great Gatsby tomorrow and continue onto Miller's Death of a Salesman next week.

English III

Pre-AP English is finishing "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" (edited version) and beginning an Advanced Poetry Unit next week.

I will be absent on Monday-- but students WILL be turning in their essays (major grade) to our substitute teacher Ms. Cross. There are also two assignments "due" on
Friday, January 30th. Book Talk pages (300 pages) will be recorded on progress reports, and a Book Project is due.

When I return on Tuesday, we will begin our new units as follows:

English II will review their reading and writing benchmarks before moving onto a Poetry Unit.

AP English and English III will begin their American Dream Projects. I have changed some due dates (to give students more time to complete the project)--so check the Homework calendar.

AP English will also begin reading The Great Gatsby and later continue onto Miller's Death of a Salesman. They have their first reading quiz on Wednesday 1/28.

English III
will first read MLK's "I've been to the Mountaintop" speech, and then begin reading their choice of The Great Gatsby or Of Mice and Men.

Pre-AP English will be doing a close reading of "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" (edited version) before moving onto an Advanced Poetry Unit.

I will have copies of assignment handouts available here in
"Current Assignment Handouts" as soon as they are assigned to students in class.

As always, please call or email with any questions or concerns. Thank you,

Kay Hill

Back to business as usual...

I have now updated the Home Page to include all class syllabi. As the title page explains, this
helps to answer: What are we doing ... learning ... and working on in English class?

I also updated the Current Assignment Handouts page to include current assignment handouts.

And I updated the Homework calendar to reflect some minor changes in due dates.

Also-- the ELA TAKS BENCHMARK TEST IS FRIDAY JAN. 23RD. This is an important full-length practice test. It not only gives me data on individual student progress, but insight into each individual's current writing strengths and weaknesses. (We do not teach to the test-- but we will use the data to work on authentic writing pieces.)

The first major assignment due is a Reflective Essay Final Draft due Monday, January 26th. (excluding AP classes-- their first major essay is in class on Feb. 9th)

As always, please call or email with any questions or concerns. Thank you,

Kay Hill

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a great holiday break, and I look forward to seeing everyone return on Wednesday.

JUST FYI: The handouts pertaining to year-long assignments such as "Independent Reading" (book talks) and/or "Independent Writing" (300 words homework) are still available here online. Click "Handouts" and then "BOY Handouts."

I am currently working on updating the other "handouts" sections of my website-- so they may be empty or half empty until further notice.

"Current Assignment Handouts" will be available as soon as the assignments are given out (at the latest).

I will start doing book talks this Friday, January 9th-- so any pages read over break can be credited then.

AND-- all 3rd quarter major assignment due dates are already posted under "Homework".

PLUS-- all students will receive a calendar with all
3rd quarter major assignment due dates when we begin Spring semester this week.
