Course Objectives:
- To work cooperatively in groups and individually participate in class discussions
- To take connections beyond texts and our own lives and make connections across texts, cultures and time
- To determine the universal meaning(s) in literary works
- To develop depth and complexity in reasoning, analyzing, evaluating and synthesizing critically
- To express ourselves clearly in our writing with a specific purpose and audience in mind
- To use the writing process through prewriting, drafting, revising, and editing
- To successfully develop a personal writing style/voice that focuses ideas with logical organization, a variety of sentence structure, and a balance of generalized and specific illustrative detail
- To interpret various media including visuals, art pieces, film and music
- To practice the research process and MLA citation
- To develop a life-long appreciation for reading by practicing sustained silent reading of self-selected texts
- To prepare for high stakes testing with specific strategies and skills
