We are going to begin the year in Science comparing matter! In chapter 10 we will be asking ourselves these questions and experimenting to learn the answers. How can you compare matter? How does matter change? How does matter look up close? The Big Ideas for this chapter are the following..... *Objects can be described by properties such as size, shape, and color. *Matter can be classified as solid, liquid, or gas. *Taking away or adding heat can cause matter to change states. *Objects are composed of small parts that may be seen with a magnifier. Vocabulary LESSON 1 Properties- color, shape, size, odor, and texture Solid- a state of matter that does not have its own shape Liquid- a state of matter that does not have its own shape Gas- a state of matter that spreads out to fill a space Volume- the amount of space a liquid takes up Mass- the amount of matter in an object Lesson 2 Mixture-something made of two or more things Separate- to take apart Dissolves-mixes completely with water Lesson 3 Magnify- to make objects look larger
