Adult Education Courses

Full time Ferndale High School seniors are eligible to attend Adult Education. Courses are held at the Crossroads building near Northland Mall. Each course meets every Monday and Tuesday from 3:45 to 7:15 for ten weeks. The cost is $100 per course. An application is available in the counseling center. A senior can earn not more than two credits through the Adult Education program.

Testing Out

Any high school student who wishes to test out of a course in which she/he is not enrolled may do so by taking the final examination for the course and earning a grade of at least C+ (77 %) or by demonstrating mastery of the subject matter as determined by the assessment used in lieu of a final examination. Credit for a course earned by a student through this process may be used to fulfill a course or course-sequence requirement and be counted toward the required number of credits needed for graduation but may not be used to determine the student’s GPA. The student may not receive credit for a course in the same subject area but lower in the course sequence. The courses Government and Physical Education are exempt for the testing out process. Testing Out occurs twice a school year. Check with your counselor for more information.

On Line Courses

Students may take on-line courses from Michigan Virtual High School (www.mivhs.org) Cost ranges from $109 to $375 per course. For graduation purposes, seniors must finish all course work and submit grade to counselor at least one week prior to graduation. On-line applications are available in the counseling center.

Summer School

Ferndale High School Summer Academy runs for four weeks during the summer. Students may take at most two courses. Many of the course offerings are required ninth and tenth grade courses and are for students who need to repeat them. The cost is $75 a class.

For those students who attend summer school in a different school district, pre-approval from your counselor is highly recommended to ensure an appropriate, necessary course is being taken and that the course will be included on the transcript.
