Spelling

Dear Parents,

Spelling instruction for first grade students will begin following winter break.  Each week there will be a list of spelling words that the students will be responsible for learning.  You will find a list of these words in your child’s Friday folder this week. (Attached to this letter)

The words have been derived from the Rebecca Sitton high frequency word list that is located in the back of the AKS booklet, environmental words being taught, and words that are related to the specific phonics skills that have been introduced.

The children will be tested each Thursday using a dictation format.  Sentences including the weekly spelling words will be orally given to the students.  The students will be required to write the entire dictated sentence using proper spacing, correct spelling of the week’s words, correct capitalization and punctuation for the beginning and end of each sentence.  Correct letter formation will be assessed as well.

Please be aware that spelling words are cumulative. Words that have previously been covered must be correctly spelled in future assessments.  This includes spelling tests as well as other classroom written assignments.

Students will receive a spelling grade and a periodic mechanics grade which will be based on spacing, letter formation, capitalization and punctuation.  Each week there will be a total of 100 points on the spelling test.  The number of cumulative spelling words given each week will determine the points counted for each word. Note that you will see two specific grades on this test.  You will see a numerical number next to an S (spelling) and another next to an M (mechanics).  Attached please find the 16 weeks of spelling words.

For your convenience, the word lists can be found on my newletter page.  :)

 Thank you for your help.

Happy Spelling!
