Yes, there is homework in First Grade! :)
In order to balance a need for practice, parent awareness, and busy lifestyles, I create homework packets that are passed out on a weekly basis. You can look for your stapled packet in the Friday folder. You have 7 days to complete the packet and return it by Thursday mornings. It is perfectly fine to complete it early and turn it in. A homework basket is displayed in the classroom at all times. Students may place it in the basket upon completion. I will check the basket Thursdays to see if all the homework is there.
The homework packet will include:
1. Typed directions
2. Stapled worksheets to practice both Language Arts and Math skills
3. 10 sight words to learn to read
4. Upcoming story vocabulary words to learn to read
5. Weekly Purple Reading Log.
This notebook begins in September. Students are asked to document 5 books a week that have been read. Early in the year, it is fine to share the reading with an adult. Beginning in January I ask that books be read by the student. A recent incentive to complete the log is the Pizza Hut Book-It program. Students who complete all logs for the entire month will be given a coupon for a free personal pan pizza. This will be stapled directly into the log to celebrate the sweet success of completion on time. :)
Completing weekly homework is a great way to sharpen skills! It also is a component on the "Weekly conduct" grade so be sure to complete it and send it in by Thursday! :)
