May in 3rd Grade

Unit 9 Math Assessment will be given on Thursday, May 24th

This month brings many changes and activities.

Allergy season is in full swing.  Even though the trees look lovely and the flowers smell sweetly many of the children are not able to enjoy them due to coughing and sneezing.  A letter was sent home in mid April regarding administering medication during the school day.  Please make sure that you have a completed/current 504 form in the nurse’s office.  If there are any changes in medication a new form must be completed before new medicine or dosage can be given.  If you are giving over the counter medication please know that the medicine must be personally delivered to the school and administered by the parent.  Safety is our #1 concern!

  1. Please remember that the school policy is, you are late and should receive a late pass if you enter school after 8:15.
  2. If your child is sick and you are keeping them home, please call the Nurse's Office to let them know.
  3. Call a classmate if you are absent for the current homework assignment.
  4. During dismissal if you would like to talk to me about any concerns I may ask you to make an appointment because the school yard is not a private environment and I do not want your child's academics discussed openly.
  5. PS 19 is part  of the "School Messenger" system.  This system calls primary phone numbers of parents.  It contacts parents to notify them of safety and/or academic issues at PS 19.  This will not replace notices!  If you would like to be a part of this program please fill out the form sent home.
  6. If you are planning on sending in cupcakes for your child's birthday please speak to me about it so we can plan accordingly.
  7. Reading every night is very important.  The Reading Log will be collected at the end of each month.  If the Reading Log is not handed in completed and with a parent signature it will not be counted as complete.  I have stapled it into your child's planner so I know it goes home nightly!  Please review the importance of reading every night to your child.
  8. I do give homework every night except for Friday.  Please remind your child, the quality of the work should be high!
  9. The children will be asked to reflect on their work in all subject areas and create realistic and current goals they would like to reach in each subject.  We are going to try and keep these goals updated and current as the topics in school change.  As you work with your child at home ask them what their goals are in the different subjects.  I broke ELA up into reading and writing so the children have 2 different goals for ELA.  We as a community, feel it is important for the children to be aware of their strengths and weakness and think about how they can work on improving and polishing them.
  10. Remind your child of the importance of homework and support them as best you can.
  11. Math and Word Study progress checks will usually be given once a week.

Parent and School Connection

Study Island is a software program used in the computer lab.  The children have been introduced to it and are able to use it at home.  It is a wonderful tool to support and enrich skills and strategies they are using in school.  All the children have been given a log in and password.  If you have any questions please let me know.

A computer program helped to support school personnel and parents is called ARIS.  ARIS (Achievement Reporting and Innovative System) is a great DOE service that can give you biographical information regarding your child as well as assessment data (you can only get information about your child).  To further support the school and home connection ARIS has implemented a parent link which can be accessed at www.arisparentlink.org/parentlink
