Long Aa
Week of August 24, 2009 |
|
This week, we are learning about the long vowel Aa. Long Aa says its name. We are also learning that "silent e at the end of a word makes the vowel long." Long Aa Lesson Extensions: Angels Cut out a large white triangle for the body, and skin-colored circle for the head, and trace hand prints on white construction paper for the wings. Glue together, and add facial features and a halo.
"A" Collage Cut out a large "A" from poster board or other heavy paper. Have the children find pictures of things in magazines that begin with the letter "A", and either cut or tear them out. Glue them on the "A." Acorn Collage Cutout a large "A" from heavy paper or cardboard. Have the children collect acorns, and glue them to the "A". Explain how acorns grow into oak trees.
Silent Ee Activities Silent e Look up a simple poem or story on the Internet and print it out. You may wish to use a fairy tale, nursery rhyme, or folk song. Read the piece together and then have your child cross out every silent e. Then read the piece again. How did it change? You can repeat the activity with different pieces of writing or take a walk and challenge your child to read signs in the same way. Tub, Cub Write down different one-syllable words that have short vowels, such as tub, cub, rub, tap, cap, gap, kit, bit, sit, rip, shin, etc. Pronounce them together and then have your child write the words with a silent e at the end and read them aloud again. You may wish to do this activity with magnetic letters as a fun alternative. If your child is unfamiliar with the word, look it up in a dictionary together.
