About Me

My name is Karen Astugue, and I would like to tell you a little more about myself. I was born and raised in Metairie, LA. I attended St. Edward the Confessor Elementary School and Archbishop Chapelle High School. I went to LSU and majored in Business Management. After taking a year off from school when my oldest daughter was born, I transferred to the University of New Orleans for my last year and graduated in 1999 with a BS in Business. After working for a couple of years in the business field, I decided that I wanted to become a teacher. It had always been what I really wanted to do. Also, my husband was a teacher, and I was really jealous of all the holidays he was able to spend with our children :) In 2001, I began teaching at St. Louis Cathedral School (Now Cathedral Academy) in the French Quarter. It was a very small and quaint school with a lot of history. The following year, I transferred to the Jefferson Parish Public School System. I also began taking courses at Southeastern Louisiana University. I taught First Grade for three years at J.S. Maggiore Elementary School in Kenner. During those three years, I completed my Masters Degree in Teaching from SLU. I graduated in May 2005 and became certified in 1-6 regular education, and 1-12 Special Education. In June 2005, I also completed the requirements to become a certified Early Childhood teacher. In May 2005, my husband and I decided to move to the northshore and purchased a house in Covington - and as excited as we were - we had no idea just how wise our purchase would be. The house that we had been living in had over 3 feet of water from Hurricane Katrina. I was very excited about moving the Northshore, and equally as excited about coming to work for the St. Tammany Parish School System. I began the 05-06 school year teaching K-3 Special Education at Brock Elementary in Slidell. The school did not fare well at all and was completely destroyed. In November 2005, I was able to transfer to Woodlake and take over a T-1 vacancy. I am now in my fourth year of teaching T-1 at Woodlake, and I hope to remain here for a long time! :) My husband, Mike, teaches Social Studies at Fontainebleau High School. He is also an assistant football and track coach at FHS. We have two daughters, Katie, who is in sixth grade at Lake Harbor and Megan, who is in third grade at Woodlake. Our son, Logan, was born in June 2008. We also have a Black Lab named Cane. In my spare time I like to scrapbook, read, and play with my children. I love LSU and enjoy attending sports events. You can also find me at the Mandeville Trailhead Market on Saturdays selling crafts.
