Spanish 1 » Syllabus ¡Bienvenidos a Español! Course Scope: This one-year course is designed to acquaint students with the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish at an introductory level. The focus is communication in Spanish incorporating understanding of Hispanic cultures, connecting with other disciplines, comparing native language to Spanish, and participating in multicultural communities. The course provides practice in correct use of basic vocabulary and language structures to enable students to function effectively within realistic settings. Instructional practices will incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to our society. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This course fulfills one elective credit required for high school graduation. Course Goals: 1. To recognize the sound system of the Spanish Language. 2. To acquire a basic oral and written Spanish vocabulary. 3. To comprehend simple oral and written communications in the Spanish language. 4. To communicate in simple conversations in Spanish. 5. To demonstrate a knowledge of basic Spanis language structures. 6. To become acquainted with Hispanuc cultures. 7. To recognize the value of learning Spanish. Instructional Methodology 1. You will be required to respond orally in the target language- as a member of a group as well as an individual. 2. Incomplete and late work will not receive credit. 3. A review of all that takes place in class each day should be considered as part of the daily assignments. You will be asked questions about the previous day’s material. It is expected that you take notes of all explanations and examples given in class. Your participation in all class activities is imminent, as well. The use of English will be avoided as much as possible. Grading: 1. The grading in my class will be weighted according to the following percentages. a. Tests= 30%, Oral Participation= 20%, Written/Listening/Reading participation 20%, Homework= 15%, Projects= 15% 2. You are expected to be attentive and to participate actively and voluntarily since learning another language means that you have to use it in order to achieve proficiency! Your grade will reflect on those premises. 3. In order to keep things simple and consistent, grades will not be curved. Review of grades and make-up work: 1. Your grade is available for review and discussion, however that discussion must take place outside of class time. 2. After an absence, it is your responsibility to speak with me and obtain the make-up work within 3 days following your absence. You will have 1 make-up day for each day absent. Exception: Major assignments given with more than one-week notification of the due date are due on the day you return from your absence. Any major assignment submitted after the due date will not receive credit. 3. After an absence, it is your responsibility to inquire about the assignments, quizzes, and tests you missed. It is recommended that you find someone in class who can share that information with you if you are absent. You will be in your seat when the bell rings with all materials necessary for class. 2. Homework MUST be completed when the bell rings. If it is not, it will be marked as incomplete and no credit will be given. 3. There will be no candy, food, or drink, other than water, allowed in this classroom. 4. You will continue working and not begin packing up your things until 2 minute before the bell has rung. 5. Sleeping (or putting your head down) is not permitted. If you are not feeling well, please inform me so that you can be excused to the nurse. 6. It is impolite to talk out of turn. Please raise your hand and wait to be called on. 7. You will work quietly on assignments and will not to engage in disruptive activities while others are speaking or working. 8. You may not work on other class assignments during class time as listening skills play an important role in language learning. 9. You may not leave the room without my permission at any time. Hall passes are limited (2 each quarter) so please use the time before and after class to go to your locker and the restroom. 10. You are responsible for the textbook issued to you. If it is lost or damaged you will be fined. 11. Cheating (which includes, but is not limited to, using translators, asking native speakers, and copying) will not be tolerated. Anyone caught cheating or allowing others to cheat will be given a zero. Discipline Procedures: 1. Verbal warning 2. Detention 3. Phone conference with parent 4. Counselor referral 5. Dean referral Extra Help: You may speak with me before or after class about making arrangements to meet if you need extra help with anything. Please plan ahead. Remember: It is your education—it is your responsibility. Required Class Materials: You are expected to bring the following materials with you daily: 1. Spanish dictionary 2. Pencil or pen 3. Spanish 3-ring binder with the following dividers, properly labeled: a. Notes b. Handouts c. Vocabulary Periodic binder checks will be conducted to ensure you are prepared for success in Spanish.
