UNIT 1 PROCESS SKILLS Study Guide Science Terms - Observation - Any information that we gather using our 5 senses.
- Inference - When you interpret an observation.
- Prediction - An inference based on current evidence or past experience.
- Classify - Grouping together items that are alike in some way.
- Model - A picture, diagram, or other representation of an object.
- Communicate - Process of sharing information and ideas with others.
- Hypothesis - Possible explanation for a set of observations. An if…then…statement.
- Controlled Experiment - An experiment in which all factors except one are kept constant.
- Variable - Any factor in an experiment that can change.
- Data - Observations & measurements you record in an experiment.
- Conclusion - A statement that sums up what you have learned from an experiment.
- Property - A characteristic that distinguishes one substance from another.
- Qualitative observation - Any observation that does not involve measurement or numbers.
- Quantitative observation - Any observation that does involve measurement or numbers.
Variables Two types of variables: Manipulating variable - one that changes Responding variable - measure or observe 5 steps in performing an Experiment 1. Asking a scientific question 2. Form a hypothesis (if…then…) 3. Design experiment 4. Interpret/record data 5. Draw a conclusion *Know how to create a cycle diagram (page. 209)
