Converting between Proper & Improper Fractions Converting between Proper & Improper Fractions

Proper fractions and Improper Fractions

Proper fractions have a smaller number on top than the bottom number.

Improper fractions have a larger number on top then the bottom number.

To change an improper fraction into a proper fraction.

Divide denominator into numerator (the bigger number inside the division bracket). The number on top is the whole number, the remainder is the new numerator and the denominator stays as it was previously.

To change mixed number into an improper fractions.

Multiply denominator by whole number and add numerator to that answer, that becomes your new numerator and denominator stays as it was.
