Grade 6 Summer Reading Assignment

 

 

 

 

 

Each incoming 6th grade student is required to read one book from the following summer reading list and to report on this book using the attached Summer Reading Assignment Sheet.  This assignment is to be completed by the student and will count for one test grade in the first marking period. The scoring for this assignment will be: Outstanding/Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.  This assignment will be graded and averaged into your child’s 1st quarter grade. The assignment is due Friday, September 16th.  A variety of books have been chosen to meet the interest and reading ranges of all students.

Pretend the publishers of this book are looking for a new and exciting book cover design.  They ask you to come up with a high quality, attractive cover that is different and unique.  Include the title, author, an illustration, and inside cover information summarizing the book. Use unlined paper for your book cover.

 

Key Words

 

Climax-              the highest point of interest and excitement in the story; the turning point of the story

Conclusion-        the ending or last part of the story

Illustration-        a drawing, photo, or illustration which shows a scene from the book

Introduction-      the information and events that lead you into the story itself; the beginning of the story

Plot-                   the action of the story

Publishers-         persons or companies that print books, plays, music, etc.

Setting-              where and when a story takes place, such as New York, pioneer days”, or Northern Canada, 1865”

Summarizing-   briefly describing the plot of a book
