English Language Arts (ELA)
The emphasis of the ELA program is on the continued maximum growth of the student in the areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. We have shifted away from a basal anthology toward use of short, non-fiction literature with an emphasis on science, math, and social studies, as well as longer, fictio-based trade books. The new common core standards require students to draw conclusion, make inferences, compare non-fiction and fiction passages, and support their answers with details from the stories to PROVE their positions. We also incorporate Literature Circles into our reading, which allows students to utilize their acquired skills on high interest chapter books, and take on discussion roles with their peers. It is amazing to watch students take charge of a literature discussion, and demonstrate their true comprehension.
The written portion of ELA is demonstrated in a variety of formats, and exercised in all content areas. Formats students will use are: personal narrative, comparative writing, explanatory writing, persuasive writing, expository writing and creative writing. Students will also have the opportunity to write letters, interviews, research reports, and poetry. Again, the CCS requires students to use text based information to support their position in a writing piece. We no longer just write to express our opinions, but are required to back our opinion with text based information.
Spelling Spelling Pre-tests are given each Friday, with the list going home for review over the weekend. Post-tests are given on Thursday for all students. Spelling words are available on this site. Please check the link on the menu bar.
Mathematics
The math curriculum emphasizes the students' development of understanding and reasoning, skill in operations: addition & subtraction, multiplication & division, fractions & decimals, measurement, perimeter, area, & volume, and estimating runs throughout each of these concepts. Math is taught using a problem solving approach.
Science The science curriculum emphasizes a hands-on approach to learning aimed at furthering the students’ problem solving skills and developing positive science attitudes while learning new content. The fifth grade units of study are: Forces and Motion, light and sound, and ecosystems. Encompassing these units will be the reinforcement of the Scientific Method and Science Inquiry.
Social Studies The fifth grade Social Studies curriculum engages students in the study of the United States and North America. Government (federal, state, and local) is also part of the basic unit of study. The students will study more intensly DBQ’s (document based questions) in preparation for the 5th grade New York State Social Studies test which is administered in the Fall of 5th grade and again in grade 8.
