Science We have begun the year classifying organisms. Students are classifying plants and animals using a dichotomous key. We are studying vertebrates and invertebrates, plant reproduction by seeds and spores, and vascular and nonvascular plants. We will have a test on Chapter 1 on Tuesday 9/29/09. English In Chapter 1 students are learning about nouns. We are focusing on common and proper nouns, singular and plural nouns, possessive nouns, collective nouns, and nouns used as direct and indirect objects. We will also be using the Buckle Down workbook as a review for the NYS ELA test later this year. Spelling We will complete one unit of spelling words per week. Please review these words with your child. We have a classroom Spelling Bee review every Thursday but some students still need additional practice. Math We have completed lessons 1-8 in Chapter 1. There will be periodic quizzes as well as chapter tests. Students are learning about place value, ordering numbers, decimals, and word problems. Reading We have completed the first few stories in the reading textbook. There will be weekly tests following each story as well as a Unit test. Students are also required to have a free reading book at their desks at all times. We have 15 minutes of D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read) daily. We will also be reading some books together as a class. Writing Students completed their first writing assignment - the interview. They interviewed another student about his or her summer vacation and then wrote an article. These can be viewed in the hallway outside of the classroom! Religion Students are learning about creation and God's gifts to us. We are also studying the sacraments. We will have a Peace Circle every Friday before Mass in which students discuss random acts of kindness and how we can make ourselves better Christians.
