TOP TEN IN STATE! John Paul II High School’s Academic Decathlon team, the only private or Catholic high school in the Texas Academic Decathlon state medium school competition last weekend at San Antonio, earned a top ten ranking and 11 individual medals, including one accompanied by a $750 scholarship. Edward Song, a senior varsity member, earned the monetary award with his fifth place all-around ranking in the ten-subject competition. He also received a second place in varsity mathematics, second place in art, fourth places in varsity art and varsity language and literature, fifth place in varsity music, and sixth places in varsity essay and interview. Hunt Brothers, a junior varsity member, received two gold medals, one in varsity social science and one in varsity art; he also earned a bronze in varsity language and literature, a fourth place in varsity speech, and a sixth place in varsity mathematics. A gold medal also went to Matt Kaminsky, a junior scholastic member, for his perfect score in scholastic interview. Matt also earned a bronze medal for scholastic art, fifth places in scholastic language and literature and scholastic speech, and a seventh place in scholastic music. Henry Nguyen, senior honors member, earned silver medals in honors mathematics and honors art, while Conan Butterly, a sophomore varsity member, received bronze medals in varsity art and varsity music. Conan also was seventh in varsity mathematics. Other team members also ranked in the top ten in various subjects, including: Jennifer Campbell, fourth in scholastic essay, sixth in scholastic interview, and eighth in scholastic art; Dina Minkow, fifth in scholastic interview and ninth in scholastic art; Caroline Dillard, ninth in honors art, and James Smith, eighth in honors art. Ryan Miller, team alternate, also helped the team with his behind-the-scenes work. Coaches are Amy Eckler, Suellyn Chesal, Pam Chaney, and Paul Philp. The team was accompanied by Thomas Poore, JPII president, and his wife; Mr. Poore was also a presenter at the awards ceremony at the Omni Hotel. A large group of parents, siblings, and grandparents also attended the awards ceremony and the super quiz relay at San Antonio College.
