Student Selection

|
All students may apply to participate in Academic Decathlon and Octathlon. Interested students should contact Mrs. Amy Eckler or any of the assistant coaches. There will be several meetings for students and parents to ask questions of the coaching staff. Using faculty recommendations, standardized test scores, grades in all classes, and interviews, coaches will select the students who will be in the classes. Classes are generally limited to no more than 20 students. The classes fulfill speech or fine arts credits as well as earn the highest grade points (same grade points as Pre-AP and AP courses). Over the course of the year through testing, working in groups, results in meets, and by decision of the coaches, twelve students are selected for the regionals team. A team may consist of nine competing students: 3 A, 3 B, and 3 C students (grade level is determined by Grade Point Average). We will also take three alternates in case one of the nine is unable to compete. The selection of the team is the coaches' decision alone. Although John Paul II High School is a diocesan parochial school, whose athletics' teams participate in TAPPS leagues, Academic Decathlon and Octathlon are governed by rules and guidelines of the University Interscholastic League. Students must meet all of the conditions to compete including eligibility.
