Eighth Grade Language Arts Welcome to the 8th grade home page
9/02/09 Today we got reacquainted with each other again and discussed new rules and expecations of the classroom. We had a great first day and I expect it to be an awesome year. HW: Have parent or guardian sign the classroom rules sheet and please return by Tuesday, Sept. 8. 9/03/09 Today we discussed some physics involved in roller coasters and watched a video on this subject. Noting details was the reading focus. Students discussed the content and took notes over the video, which will be used for tomorrow's reading assignment. HW: Please return expectation sheet signed by parent. 9/04/09 Today we worked in groups on our Reading Engagement packet, "The Scream Machine". Reading skills: Comprehension, Inferences, Vocabulary, Noting Details HW: Please finish the packet for reading if you did not get done in class. Return Tuesday for review and credit. Don't forget to return signed expectation's sheet. Have a great weekend! 9/09/09 Yesterday we took notes over chapter 11...review of basic parts of speech. Today we reviewed by doing group work over this material. HW: Do p 26 and 27 9/11/09 Today we took a quiz over nouns. We also discussed this quarter's book requirements. 9/15/09 Handed back quiz Notes/Activity over pronouns No homework - expect possible quiz over today's notes 9/17/09 Today we took notes over elements of poetry in preparation for amendment poems. Bring library books tomorrow for book report contract information. 9/18/09 Today we took a quiz over pronouns. Students were then given time to read on their library book for report. 9/21/09 We worked on Latin roots. We also started a vocabulary unit. First two pages are due tomorrow.
9/22/09 Today we discussed context clues on our vocabulary unit and continued our work on the Latin roots. HW - pages 102-104 in packet due Wed. Continue reading on library book. 9/24/09 Today we took notes. Tomorrow expect a short quiz over adverbs. Continue reading library book
9/23/09 Today we took notes over chapter 11. Tomorrow we may have short quiz over notes taken. Do pages 107/108 in vocabulary packet. 9/28 Today we finished notes over ch 11 Took vocabulary test - Unit 9 Started adverb activity Homework: none 9/29/09 Today we worked on our adverb poster and reviewed adverbs HW -Review sheet p. 54 and 56. Follow directions on sheets 9/ 30/09 Checked homework and reviewed adverbs Reading skill - Context clues HW - Context clues p. 4-8 due Monday Continue reading AR book for the quarter 10/01/09 I will not be able to update today due to the fact that I am taking the day off to prepare for a wedding this weekend. I will return Monday. 10/09/09 Today we reviewed our last week's reading skill: Figurative language / denotation and connotation. We also started unit 3 vocabulary. Each student was assigned a word to teach for Monday. We started a new reading skills packet: Interpreting graphs, charts, diagrams and timelines. HW - Vocab pages assigned yesterday Continue reading AR - two weeks until the end of the quarter 10/10/09 Homework: Bring materials for your teach-a-word to class tomorrow. Present them on Monday. Continue work on vocabulary packet. Test over unit 3 tomorrow. 10/13/09 Finished teach-a-word presentations Reviewed 5w's and H - Used skill on video sit com Test tomorrow over Unit 3 voabulary 10/14/09 We took our Unit 3 test. Worked on crossword - due tomorrow Foldable HW - finish crossword; continue reading AR book 10/19/09 Today students worked on a newspaper activity (5w's and H). Continue to finalize AR books and testing for this quarter. Wednesday is the deadline.
Begin 2nd quarter 10/26/09 Students discussed questions regarding topics such as peer pressure and cliques, which served as a pre-reading activity for the class novel, "The Outsiders". Vocabulary and chapters 1/2 study questions will be handed out tomorrow. Students recieved their 2nd quarter book report requirements today also.
