With all the news on the Swine Flu, the media is ripe with interesting biases, agendas, and angles. This is a great time for all of you to really pay attention to real application of rhetorical strategies to get acheive purpose! The trick is to be aware and NOT become too cynical. A challenge for us all. Here's another challenge. We are only a week away from your AP test. This week of classes was meant to be a very intense review with extra sessions offered in the afternoon. Things change, but the test still remains the same. Keep in mind the importance of the test and what I am about to offer may not seem too bad. You have worked hard this year and have the ability to get college credit for English Composition, BUT (notice the shift) you will have to dig into some self motivation here. I've given you two links. The first one will give you ALL the essay prompts, sample essays, and commentary on the essays from the past five years. LOADS of samples here. The second is a link to a PDF file that, if you look in the table of contents gives you a sample multiple choice test with answers. Here is what I am proposing: if you look at at least two sample prompts plus their sample student essays of EACH type of question (argumentative, rhetorical, and synthesis) AND write a quick outline for each and a short paragraph on observations made in the essays on what makes them successful or not, I will give you a 100% in the test and paper category for this six weeks. So that would be a total of SIX prompts (two from each category) that you would be looking at. Want another 100% in the test category? If you take HALF the AP test (two passages), check your answers with the key found in the same pdf file, AND then write a sentence or two about why the write answer is what it is, YOU GET ANOTHER 100%. Pretty sweet deal, no? You review AND get credit! MAKE SURE TO EMAIL IT ALL TO ME BY 9:00 SUNDAY EVENING!!!!! Good luck, don't get sick, and take some time to review. I promise you won't be sorry you did. 4th Period: Busy and Productive Day On my desk in my classroom, there is a stack of purple and yellow packets. Go ahead and get one, please. You will use this as your guide for making your own synthesis question and source packet. The front page (purple) is a sample and the back side has notes to help you make your own. YOU NEED TO HAVE YOURS DONE BY THE END OF CLASS. Next, look at the yellow sheets. You'll find a collection of sources and an idea of what they look like. Start on this, ok? Go to this link for details on what each of your sources should be. By the end of class tomorrow, you will need to have the source section completed. Look at Questia! You might be able to find ALL your sources through that one site. Ask Ms. Rogers for your password if you forgot it. Use the Easy Bib citation maker link (or another one you know of and like) for MLA formatting of the sources. By the end of class today, you should have your prompt and and source pages you finished set to me at jmetcalf@ischoolhigh.com. You need to come to class tomorrow with all your sources in hand so we can polish them for the final product. Thank you for being so incredibly wonderful so that I can trust you all with this. You really are amazing. EASY BIB: citation Maker
5th and 1st Math Study Island Because Mr. Phillips is fantastic, he has gotten a Study Island session prepared for you! You are expected to use the time in English to complete the math session. Focus and do your best since the grade (work ethic) will be reflected in both subject areas. 2nd By the end of the period, you all should have ALL your sources put together in a packet like the sample (purple and yellow) we looked at yesterday. Go through it several times to make sure that it has the correct required sources and LOOKS the same as the sample. Remember, in some cases like this assignment, every little detail matters (i.e. box around the MLA citation, italics, etc.). If you are having a hard time finding sources, try Questia. (Ask Ms. Rogers for your login and password if you forgot.) The other thing to think about is that maybe you need to tweak your prompt to be able to find more sources. If you get finished early. you can start working on what sort of handout you would like to give the class the day you present. I know we breezed through that, but you can play around with it anyway. Think of something that would hold the attention of your audience and be informative about your topic. The sample I mentioned had a fill in the blank handout so people would pay attention during the presentation. You will need to have this done by the end of NEXT period. I will be back to help you with it, but you will need to have some sort of idea so we can get going on it ASAP. By the end of class, you need to email me your SYNTHESIS PROMPT AND SOURCES. jmetcalf@ischoolhigh.com Thank you for being so great at working independently. You really proved yesterday that you have the ability to focus and take care of business. THAT IS GREAT! I'm not sure I have ever had a group of students like that. Thank you again.
