I'd like to start a conversation with other parents via this blog on their thoughts regarding the benefits of the State testing (pro or con).

Several months ago my work situation changed and I had more free time than I was used to. I was happy that I could pick up my children from school instead of them taking the bus. At school, I got to meet many of the moms (some dads and grandparents too) waiting for their children. During our conversations while we waited for the bell to ring, I learned a lot about what goes on in and around school. I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the many things that go on at John Lewis Childs school especially the events run by the PTA. As a full-time professional I never had the time for PTA. I honestly thought it was a bunch of clickey woman with too much time on their hands. As I said, I learned otherwise. Many of them are working moms just like me, who manage to squeeze in some time to lend a hand. During the past six months, I started to volunteer an hour here and there during PTA sponsored events (like the book fair and plant sale just before mother's day). I got to attend field day and flag day. I found out that the shows put on in school during the day are paid for by the PTA with money they get from membership fees. (I was embarrassed that I declined to join PTA because I thought they would call me up to volunteer.) Anyway, to make a long story short, I am so glad to I've learned about the things that go on in the school and I'm really happy that I can spend more time helping out anyway I can (and I will continue to do so even when I go back to work full time). To see the kids faces when they are shopping or laughing/learning during a show is priceless. And to the ladies (and gentlemen) who give their time to make our childrens time at school well spent, THANK YOU. I never realized how much goes on behind the scenes to pull off everything that goes so smoothly...like the recent Harvest Fair. It was our first and we had a blast. (By the way, I joined PTA this year. It really is an inexpensive way to show our family's support for all you do for our children.)

A NEW FEATURE ON THE CALENDAR:
Did you know that you can send yourself a reminder for any posting on the PTA calendar?
Just click on the event to open the description box and select the REMIND ME button. Fill out the information and a reminder will be sent to your email address on the date/time that you choose. You can also include a customized note to yourself about the event. It's a very handy tool to help parents keep track of school events. Try it and give your feedback on the message board or blog. Don't forget to tell your friends.

We all know we have a parking problem around the school...especially on Tyson. We also know we have a "favorite policeman" who loves to show up on rainy and snowy days. We've been told that if we park by the fire hydrant or in front of the gate, there's a good chance a ticket will be issued. Considering all of this, we, as parents, I think, need to try and help ourselves. On Wednesday afternoon, there were 4 vehicles doubleparked from the hydrant back towards the perfume company. Besides traffic flowing in the wrong lane to pass these vehicles, you also had school buses that had to navigate around these vehicles. This type of activity is what causes the police to come and issue tickets and make it even more difficult for us to park. I just think we need to be a little more cognizant of our parking behavior so that maybe, just maybe, they'll give us a break.

As a class mom, I'm interested to know if we are allowed to give another parent a list of the children in the classroom?? I understand that I cannot release address and telephone info, but can names be released (for example, for the purposes of birthday parties, etc.).

What the heck is this art frame they want us to buy for almost 30$$$$$. It seems like a rip off another silly way to make money for some company using our childrens art work to get us to buy a frame

As many of you are aware, Donna Vargas and I have worked for over a year in an effort to have the bus eligibility requirements for 5/6 graders in our district reduced to 1/2 a mile from 1 mile. There is a vote on May 19 (during school budget elections) regarding this referendum. Many of you may remember signing a petition that was passed around last summer with this goal in mind. It is important that the community get out and vote to make this happen. Please pass this note along to anyone in the district, whether or not they are directly affected by the outcome, reminding them to get out and vote on May 19. The vote is for a one-year trial period with no additional cost to taxpayers.
Thanks very much.

I think it is great that JLCS will no longer write the name of the teacher for the coming year on the last report card. Being a mom who had to live through 3 meldowns on the last day of school (2 different kids) when her child did not get the teacher they wanted. I am thrilled that the last day of school will be just that, a last day of school and the start of summer. I will not have to open that envelope in fear of my child being upset because they did not get the teacher they wanted. Looking forward to the last day being fun all around. Also, great for the main office- it avoids unhappy parent stampede on the principal's office and the main office will have more time to assign classrooms. Good all around.
