The agony and ecstasy of 5k running

Our Races Our Races

During the school year, we train for four 5K races.  Two are in the fall and two are in the spring.  They are, The Race for the Cure, The Donald P. Sutherland 5K Run for Kids, The Rotary Race at Green Meadow and the Freihofer's Run for Women.

The Race for the Cure is on Saturday, October 3rd.  The race begins on Madison Ave. under the Empire State Plaza bridge, meanders through Washington Park and concludes where we began.  Approximately 2,000 people participated in it and  this past fall,  D.P.S. had 30 runners take part in the memorable event.  Although daunting to parents at first, it is extremely safe as witnessed by the quantity of children participating in it from across the school district.

The Donald P. Sutherland 5K Run for Kids is hosted by D.P.S. and takes place at Columbia High School on their beautiful cross country trail.  This years race takes place on  Saturday, October 10th at 10:30.   Last year, over 100 kids from across the district ran in this amazing event.  Unlike the road races, this is a trail run which is significantly different than a road race.  It can be more demanding as hills are steeper, there is mud, puddles, sticks and leaves.  The kids will get muddy and will probably be more tired than when they cross the finish line at the RFC or Freihofer.  But, it's THEIR race.  There is no other race like it anywhere.  A 5K trail run that is only for kids is simply unheard of.  We're proud of it and so are the kids!

The Rotary Run held at Green Meadow Elementary School at the end of May and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Rensselaer County.  The runners begin in the parking lot, move to the fields behind the school, continuing onto the neighboring roads and concluding in front of the school where they started.  The Schodack Police are on site to block traffic as well as monitor the runners.  It's a great community event that we are proud to be a part of.

The Freihofer Run for Women is held on the same course as the Race for the Cure in early June.  More information will follow as we get closer to it.
