The 2009 Fall harvest Run will be held on Thursday, October 21st. On October 21st, D.P.S. will host the Annual Fall Harvest Run. Each year, families are invited to watch our students culminate 6 weeks worth of distance running in what has become a truly unique event. Beginning on September 14th, when students come to p.e., they will engage in cross country running in conjunction with the unit of choice at the time. At the end of the period, we will head outside for our run. Our goal is to teach our kids how to pace themselves. In our minds, cross country running isn't about racing, it's about finding a speed that their body will allow them to move at and to embrace that speed for longer distances such as a 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile. As part of their running during class, each student will receive a time for their effort when they cross the finish line. We record that time in a log for the duration of the unit. On Harvest Run day, their goal is to tie or beat the best time that they have achieved in p.e. since early September . Should they do so, they will have their name placed on our bulletin board in bold print as well as receive a special certificate that signifies their achievement. We don't reward 1st, 2nd and 3rd place when it comes to distance running. We want kids to enjoy it, not be frustrated because "they'll never win". In the "beat your time" concept, ALL kids have ownership of their success. It also recognizes kids who are working hard but may not have a chance to win. Last year we had 152 students in grades 2-5 beat their time!
