DPS 5k Run for Kids
|
|
Each October, DPS hosts it's annual 5k Run for Kids. Usually embedded with a Harry Potter theme (Order of the Pumpkin, Pumpkin of Secrets, Spirit of Sutherland - which took the place of Prisoner of Azkaband) this race has become the climactic finish of the fall running club season in our elementary schools. Part of the uniqueness of this race comes from the fact that it is only for children. Though many 5k races will have a 1 mile "kids fun run", this one really challenges the children as it approaches a true 5k in length. Children in grades 2-5, who have trained at their respective school or with their family, are welcome to run and get pretty muddy. This past year saw exceptional mud pits created by Hurricane Irene yet provided for "something to talk about" at the end of the race. The race is truthfully, very challenging. There are some hills that are difficult, the mud is slow and the terrain always changes, making it difficult to run a smooth race as can be done on the road. However, the kids seem to enjoy it and they walk out of the event with a finishing medal and a wicking t-shirt. Awards are handed to children per grade level and in the form of gold, silver and bronze medals. We have been very fortunate for the past few years to have premium sponsors such as Fleet Feet Sports of Colonie and the Hudson Mowhawk Road Runners Club work with us. Without them, this event wouldn't be what it is. Brooks Running was also a significant contributor to the 2011 race and we hope that they will stay with us for the 2012 race as well. If you have any questions, please e-mail me at Holtzja@egcsd.org. registration forms for the 2012 run will be available in September. Results from the 2011 race are on the home page of this website. Enjoy!
