10. Jesus Music – Movies like Jesus Christ Superstar and

Godspell  tried to put the “grooviness”  of Jesus out

To the youths .  Doobie Brothers did “Jesus is Just

        Alright With Me”.

The style, which met with the most opposition and controversy, was:

Disco!!!

·        It was blames for the DECADENCE (evils) of the age from open lewdness to drug abuse and AIDS

·        Studio 54 in NYC was the Mecca for the trendy Disco crowd.

·        Was a fusion of Latin, Jazz, and Soul with a BACKBEAT.

·        Donna Summer started it with song, “Love to Love You Baby”.

·        Saturday Night Fever (the movie and soundtrack) was to disco what Blackboard Jungle was to early Rock and Roll 22 years before.

·        Trammps- Disco Inferno (Burn baby burn)

·        Bee Gee’s -Staying Alive, Night Fever, How Deep is Your Love, More Than A Woman

·        Village People- YMCA, Macho Man, In The Navy

FUNK was a reaction against Disco, Pop, and Motown.

·        Was a fusion of Hard Rock and Soul, sometimes with a horn section

·        Front instrument was a “poppin’ “ Bass

·        “Outerspacey” album covers with themes for unity of the future of all races. Came about at time of Star Wars

·        Early funk styles of the 60’s originated with :

1.    the Chambers Brothers –Time Has Come Today

2.    Sly and the Family Stone (Joss Stone is granddaughter)

The 70’s and 80’s Funk Stylists were:

·        George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelics (African Counterculture, slang, wild costumes, rag dredlocks, messages of world peace and maybe visitations by aliens)

·        Isaac Hayes (the voice of Chef from South Park)-theme from  the movie Shaft)

·        Rick James- Superfreak (known as Punk Funk, from Buffalo, NY)

·        Prince

·        The Commodores with Lionel Ritchie- Brick House

·        Earth Wind and Fire (had horn section)

·        Peter Brown- Do You Wanna Get Funky

·        Average White Band

·        Tower of Power(mostly horns)-What is Hip

·        The Brother Johnson-BLAM!
