Dada or Dadaism [French, from dada, child's word for a horse or just plain baby talk] Nihilistic* movement in the arts that flourished chiefly in France, Switzerland, and Germany from about 1916 to about 1920 [and later -ed.] and that was based on the principles of · deliberate irrationality · anarchy · cynicism · rejection of laws of beauty and social organization *Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. It is often associated with extreme pessimism and a radical skepticism that condemns existence. A true nihilist would believe in nothing, have no loyalties, and no purpose other than, perhaps, an impulse to destroy.
