                      Hazen’s Happenings 

             November 2, 2009

Reading:  On level readers:  The new stories are, “Frog Gets His Song”, and “Soccer Song”. 

Phonemic Awareness:  Phoneme Segmentation

Phonics:  diphthong /ng/ and contractions with ‘ll

Fluency:  Phrasing

Comprehension:  Plot and recognize story structure

Above Level Readers:  The new stories are, “House Repair”, and “The Surprise”.  The related skills are:  Phonics:  Long e, y and inflected endings--words with –ed

Comprehension:  Drawing conclusions

Grammar: commands and exclamations

Please have your child read at least three A.R. books a week to help build fluency and comprehension. 

Spelling words:  long, song, sing, ring, bring, thing, us, must, does, food

Bonus words:  November, family

The high-frequency and robust vocabulary words are attached. 

Math:  Our test will be today on subtraction in chapter 7.  We will begin chapter 8 on subtraction facts practice.  We’ll continue to work on the Big Idea of Fact families and addition and subtraction strategies.  The problem solving skill for this week is Choose the Operation.  Please Review the vocabulary with your first grader:  How many are left?—means we subtract.  How many in all?—means we add.

Science:  Our new strand in science class is force and motion.  We’ll also begin a unit on weather and the water cycle.  Mrs. Compton has planned a trip to Oscar Scherer to observe a controlled burn area.  We’ll look for signs of new growth and discuss how the controlled burns help wildlife.  We’re also planning to go to the water plant in December with our buddies.

Social Studies:  Our unit on Thanksgiving will begin this week with our study of the Pilgrim’s voyage.  We’ll compare how life was for the Pilgrims and how it is now.  Go to the website, www.scholastic.com to read more information on this topic.

Technology:  Remind your child to work on www.clicknspell at home.

Fridays-Homework Due, Spelling test and dictation sentence test.  I am now giving a language arts grade on the weekly sentence.
