To make a Smart Box-
Look through your classroom library and find books on a theme. You need at least 4-5 books. For instance, if you have several books on Antarctia, you would go through these steps.
1. Collect your books 2. Make a directions page with the name and READ:, WRITE:, ACTIVITY:, and CHALLENGE:. 3. You can look on the internet for ideas or use teacher's resource books. 4. Put all the things to do with your theme in a box or a large baggie. 5. Place your students in groups (2-4) to work on the Smart Boxes. Some teachers use them five days a week and others only a few days a week. I try to put a high student with a low student. 6. Give them a folder to keep their work in...you can check the work on Fridays. 7. I don't give a grade as I want this to be a fun filled learning experience, but I usually give a participation grade based on their working together.
