ANIMAL SMART BOX

READ: Read all the books. Some of them are AR books, and you can take a test on them. Some of them are just for you to read and enjoy.

WRITE: -Write a story about your favorite animal
-write a cinquain poem about your favorite animal
Example:
-one word title
-two adjectives (describing words)
-three action words
-four feeling words
-synonym for title
-You are exploring in the Rainforest. You find a new animal. Is it a mammal, insect, amphibian, reptile, bird, or fish? Where does it live? What does it eat? What are you going to name it?

ACTIVITY:
-Make an animal book (4 pages of white paper, folded & stapled in middle) a) draw an animal from each classification (mammal, insect, bird, fish, amphibian, & reptile b) list 3 animals c) name characteristics of each -choose an animal for our mascot. Draw and color it. Give it a name for our room.

MAP SMART BOX

READ:

WRITE:
-write directions to your house from the school
-write a story about a bird always getting lost
-make a map of the school and label the four grades
-make up a new slogan for north, east, south, and west (never eat slimy worms)



ACTIVITY:
-watch the power point presentation on “JGMaps” (Dell Computer)
-make a map of our school room
-choose a worksheet and complete
-Complete a United States puzzle & name the states on the United States map worksheet


CHALLENGE:
-draw a map of the perfect playground for recess
-draw a map and include a map key (mountains, trees, road, lake, school, house)

PRESIDENTS SMART BOX
 
READ:

WRITE:
-write a list of things you would do if you were president for the day
-write a story about being president of the wild animals in the forest
-make a poster for you for president
-describe how you would set up a classroom to vote for president of the class
-List some rules to become president of the class

ACTIVITY:
-design an area of our classroom to vote for president of the class
-design a new flag for the United States
-invent something new (example:  a sock sorter, a new bicycle, a new skateboard)

CHALLENGE:
-go online and choose a president to print; color and write three facts about him on the back

TEXAS SMART BOX
READ:
Read all the books.  Some of them are AR books, and you can take a test on them.  Some of them are just for you to read and enjoy.

WRITE:
-make a list of jobs you think a cowboy does on a ranch
-write a letter to a cowboy and ask him questions about what you would like to know about working on a ranch
-write a story about an animal on a ranch from it’s point of view
-write a song to sing about Texas (use a tune you know to sing to the class)

ACTIVITY:
-draw a map of Texas (social studies book) and label it with major cities
-draw a picture of bluebonnets and make a cover for the book Legend of the Bluebonnets (do not copy the cover)
-choose a worksheet to complete
-design a Texas welcome page (example at bottom of page)
-make a TEXAS flap book-get a 12 X 18 construction paper, fold in half & make five flaps; on top write a T, an E, an X, an a, and a s on each flap (TEXAS) and list things starting with that letter under each flap to go with our state.

CHALLENGE:
-go online and print out the pages to make a Texas booklet; staple together (only choose 5 to 10 pictures); color your booklet.

-write a letter to one of the following:
    Mrs. Lane (tell about what you have been doing in school)
    Mrs. Bull (tell her something you have learned in school)
    Ms. Johnson (in second grade)
    Mrs. Griffin
-write a letter to an animal asking it to be your pet
-write a letter telling someone in class something you admire about them
-write a letter to a person in class & tell them something nice you saw them do


ACTIVITY:
-make a chart and label the parts of a letter
-complete a work sheet
-use the stamps around the edge of a paper to make writing paper for your partner (to use on one of the letters above)
-Explan to an alien how to write a letter

-choose a worksheet to complete

-ask 10 students what their favorite tooth paste is & make a graph showing the results
