We do guided reading in our school district so we can work with small groups on reading skills, fluency, and phonics. 

My groups come from testing at the beginning of the year.  We use the Rigby notebook to place them, the STAR test on the computer, and teacher observation.  My groups change a lot during the year...they are very flexible.  I try to have 4-5 groups as that means I can see them all during my guided reading time which is usually 35-45 minutes a day. 

Each group goes to our Literacy Library and picks out several books they want to read in their range.  They usually pick some fiction and some nonfiction books.  I put these books in a container behind my round guided reading table. 

I use a clipboard with notebook paper in it for my lessons.  I turn it sideways & just draw lines for the days, names of the students and the names of the books.  I write short notes for what we did with the book and anything needed the next day. 

I try to zoom in on one comprehension skill each week.  And then the next week I review that skill and add another skill.  With my low groups I work with phonics also.  I have a list of sight words that I have them read to me the first of school, so know which words each child needs to learn.  I write them on 3 x 5 file cards & spend a few miniutes reviewing them.

1.  On Monday, we usually discuss the cover and try to decide what the book is about.  Then we go through the book and look at the pictures and discuss. If we have time we read some of the book. 

2.  On Tuesday, we read the book quietly outloud.  If I tap their book, they read louder so I can hear them.  They have a sticky note pad to write any words that didn't make sense to them, or they didn't recognize.  Then we discuss those words (if we have time). 

3.  On Wednesday, we reread the story and discuss the setting and all the main characters.  They have to do a 4-square (paper folder in half, and in half again with four boxes)  The first box has the name & author of the story.  The second box has the main characters.  Third box is one or two sentences about the story.  The last box is for their favorite part of the story.  (They can do this at their seat, or finish it on Thurs. & turn it in to me later.) Another cute way to have them write information is a Slant 3 (fold sheet of paper on the slant two times.  They will have three areas to write or draw.)

For nonfiction the first box-name & author, the second box-main idea of the book.  The third box-vocabulary.  And the fourth box-favorite part of the book. You can have anything in your boxes; Any skills studied, or something you are working on.

We also use white boards, dry erase pens, white drawing paper, etc.  Sometimes we draw a circle in the middle for the characters and then draw lines outward to put characteristics. 

4.  On Thursday, we reread the story.  We usually finish up the four square or whatever we started the day before. 

5.  On Friday, we try to come up with higher level thinking questions to ask about the story.  What would happen if...  What if we changed the characters...   What if we changed the setting...    We usually choose another book for Monday. 

For Guided Reading, you figure out what skills that group needs to work on, and then make the lesson fit it.  You can use any books for guided reading.  We have a huge library in English and Spanish. 

It usually takes about 35-45 minutes for me to see all my groups, and for them to complete the days work on the Smart Boxes.  I have a separate 20 minute block for our basal reader.
