COMPREHENSION STRATEGIES

READING IS THINKING!
Take time to stop and think while you read!

When reading a book...

It is very helpful to make predictions about the story even before you open the book!

Think about the title, the author, and the cover illustration.

Look on the back, too! Is there a summary of the story?

Using what you know (your schema) helps you make predictions and make connections about your life and what the story is about!

Also...

always ask questions to help your child get his/her mind ready to read by thinking!

Ask questions before your read by asking about the words in the title, the author, the cover illustration, and the summary. These are really like makiing predictions. You can say: "I wonder..."

Ask questions while you read, by stopping now and then to ask about the meaning of words and to ask about the characters or events or illustrations. Think aloud about the problem and solution, too.

Ask questions after you are done reading, too. What do you think might happen next? What about the main character? Think about how she/he feels. How does this book make you feel?

Could the book have had a different ending?

Asking questions helps us better understand what we read!

Questioning gets at the deeper meaning of a story.

Remember, that not all of our questions may be anwered in a story. Some need to be inferred!

Also, what kind of feelings did you have while reading the book?

Happy? Excited? Sad? Scared? Mad?
