Twenty-four TOUCHES

24 TOUCHES ("...an idea based on 35 years of research providing clear guidance as to the steps schools can take to be highly effective in enhancing student achievement") Dr. Robert J. Marzano The principle behind 24 TOUCHES :
If a student is presented a basic skill at the beginning of the school year and that skill is never referenced again prior to working a math problem later in the school year, generally that earlier skill will not be developed. Therefore, the information reflected through that skill can not be transferred to other math problems requiring that same skill.
But, if a teacher presents new material, and he/she has orally "reviewed" or "revisited" those earlier skills again and again throughout the year, then the teacher has allowed the student a chance for recall when needed. Dr. Marzano feels that this idea of "revisiting" the skill becomes a process which he calls "touching" the skill.
In the Gibson County Special School District, all teachers are required to use the 24 TOUCHES method as often as possible. They are also required to document this method in reference to the Standards and Objectives as provided by The Tennessee State Department of Education.
