My classroom is an active place to learn and is equipped with many technological learning tools, as well as a cabinet full of fun manipulatives / games for mathematics. I also have several "Math Stations" (which we still call learning centers). I am in the process of creating a new State of Tennessee Vocabulary wall that will include the mandated 5th-6th-7th-8th vocabulary, plus some other words I will introduce to the 8th grade for their venture into Algebra I.
While at home, I am usually outside gardening or in my pool (if it is summer). I love to go to the park and power walk or run, and I am an avid Zumba student. During the winter months I devote my spare time in the evening to crocheting or adding to the creation of a math book. This book is filled with great ideas for all math teachers from elementary to high school, and has been "under construction" for many of the years while I have been a middle school, high school, and college math instructor. I have gathered ideas on how to present math to students in a more fun and user friendly format, and hopefully, when I am able to retire, I will have time to finish it. I love to share my family with my classes of students. I feel it gives them a personal perspective about who I am and how I love my life and my career. My students seem to enjoy the funny stories, as well as the informative ones, and they also soon find out that I share my "grandchildren stories" on a daily basis because I am very proud of them and their accomplishments. I do try to see that these stories fall under the category of "real life Math experiences" to give my students a view of how math affects everyone.
