Third Grade Subject Areas Math Daily assignments will be checked in class. Random assignments will be collected and scored. Tests will be graded on a percent scale. Manipulatives and projects are used to reinforce concepts and aid in learning. Multiplation facts (memorized 0 through 12) Time and Money Place Value Addition and Subtraction with regrouping Division Measurement and Geometry Problem Solving Fractions and Decimals Science Hands-on activities with an emphasis on scientific process are used to explore concepts. Activities are mostly done in class in groups. Assignments are evaluated on individual procedures and conclusions. Assessments will be given at the end of each unit. Students will rotate to different teachers for topics. Classification of Living Things The Sun and Its Family Matter and Energy Social Studies Students will be learning the history of Orange County. Students will be working on individual and groups projects. Parents are encouraged to take their children around the county to see historical points of interest we are studying. Geography of Orange County Native Americans (Juanenos and Gabrielinos) Explorers (Cabrillo, Portola, Vizcaino Mission San Juan Capistrano Ranchos First settlers and Early Towns Government and Economics Literature This series will integrate all areas of language arts (reading, writing, speaking and listening) into themes. The focus is on grade level specific reading skills and strategies that help students interpret and understand the literature selections. Third grade is the year where students read to learn. Novel units, literature circles, and research reports are also included. Focus on Comprehension skills Appreciation of a variety of literature genre Reference Materials Book Reports/Oral Presentations Book-It Reading Program (optional) Language Arts/Writing There will be an emphasis on the writing process (grammar, parts of speech, punctuation, sentence types, and paragraphs). Your child will also be learning cursive. Writing process Sentences and paragraphs Nouns/verbs/adjectives/adverbs/pronouns Prefixes/suffixes Cursive Compound words Punctuation Spelling Weekly lists of words will be sent home on Monday and tests will be given every Friday. Lists will have a phonics spelling skill, thematic tie, or frequently misspelled list. Book Reports Students are expected to read one chapter book every month. Books should be 60 pages minimum with very few pictures. Report forms, directions, and due date for each project will be sent home at the beginning of each month.
