FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ACADEMICS: DR JAMES DEMPSEY

Sports reporters sometimes write columns that start off with: “On one of those opinionated days.” They then go on to recite and comment upon ten or more of their opinions on their thoughts concerning different subjects. I am having one of those opinionated days. With the weather outside being cold and wet, and with winter almost over, we yearn for the sun and good news.

The good news I have to share is about the improving performance of the SHA students and some facts that point to that fact.

-Nine subjects last year finished with a 90% or more passing rate on Regents exams. English, US History, French and Spanish had 100% passing rates with two others were at 99%.

-We are focusing this year on Physics and Chemistry mastery rates and see progress in this area. Action plans are in place for those students experiencing difficulty in each subject.

-55.6% of all Regents exams taken last year achieved at the mastery level.

-The advanced diploma rate went from 56% to 74% in one year.

-Since 2004, only one student has not passed the Regents English exam on the first sitting, and she was sick on exam day. Upon retaking the exam in August she achieved mastery.

-There are four new college courses available to students for the 2009-2010 school year.

-95% of all Regents exams were passed on the first sitting last year. Eventually all pass in movement toward the advanced Regents diploma.

-There has not been a failure on a French Regents exam since the turn of the century.

Strive for 85 as a minimum, seek advance diplomas and take the rigorous courses is a theme. When you combine that with a top notch athletic program, music and art opportunities, the availability of Internships, academic assistance in the Learning Center (TLC), service opportunities and days, dedicated teachers, supportive parents, first class students, a remarkable trust concept and a solid religious foundation, you have a wonderful place. We are not perfect but take it from a person who has been around, SHA is a nice place for safety, order, teaching and learning and it will continue to improve it’s academics.

Hey, the sun is coming out.
