FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR OF ACADEMICS: DR. JAMES DEMPSEY

The transition from Elementary School or a Middle School can be a dramatic one for anyone. The expectations are higher, the course content is more difficult, there are many new classmates to meet and it is a new time in their lives. Unlike their previous school, where they were the oldest and wisest, they are now the “new kids on the block” with much to learn. Sacred Heart has an orientation program during the summer and also a family picnic to help welcome the incoming ladies. We also have a day just for them to walk through their schedule (Sept 2, 2009).  Several other events occur in the spring and summer which are all designed to ease the transition.

Academically we have devised the acronym “LOTTERY” to help freshwomen adapt to their new surroundings. The letters are broken down as follows:

L-Listen to directions from the teachers and staff and follow them.

O-Be on time for all classes and for school in the morning.

T-Turn in all your homework promptly. This practice will help the grade tremendously.

T-TRY, TRY, TRY, the world expects this of everyone.

E-Expect the best you can do from yourself. Henceforth, all work, tests, term papers and behavior count toward college acceptance.

R-Respect the rights of others to a peaceful environment to learn and treat others with respect.

Y-Why? Because we want the best for you in your  future.

The world changes constantly, especially for new students in a new place. By following the guidelines above, we believe that the rate of adapting to this change will win the LOTTERY. Thank you for allowing us to work with your daughters. Strive for 85 (as a minimum grade), take the rigorous courses and seek the advanced diplomas.
