GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR THIS CLASS 1. Improve writing skills for PSSA writing test and SAT test 2. Increase vocabulary from vocabulary books, short stories, and novels 3. Develop an awareness and appreciation of literature - short stories, plays, nonfiction, and poetry 4. Cultivate critical thinking for PSSA test and SAT test 5. Develop skills in grammar - needed for PSSA and SAT tests 6. Develop research skils 7. develop critical reading skills - summer reading list - book reports CLASSROOM RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Attendance and prompt arrival to class 2. Preparation - notebooks, pens, books, and in and out of class assignments 3. Note taking and reviewing 4. Reading and comprehending material assigned 5. Homework - it will be checked on a regular basis and given at least three times a week and not in excess. What is given for homework is not busy work but important reinforcement to what is needed to comprehend material 6. Test taking - if a student is absent for a test, the test will be given the day the student returns to class and it may be taken during class time as long as the student makes up the work he misses while taking the test. All make up tests must be scheduled within one week of the original test. A time will be scheduled that is convenient to both teacher and student ( during student's study, 10th period, or before homeroom) If the student does not show up on the agreed time, a 0 will be given for the grade. 7. Participate in discussions and oral assignments 8. Follow appropriate behavior 9. Consult with the teacher on any quetions concerning class work. I am available during the 10th period for extra help when needed 10. read two books on the summer reading list and take two book respot tests on those books in September EVALUATION OF STUDENTS 1. attendance 2. preparation 3. participation 4. homework 5. tests/quizzes 6. writing assignments 7. cooperation 8. accountability 9. summer reading - book reports - ( 2 each September - each to be counted as a test grade ) CLASSROOOM RULES A classroom is enhanced by its occupants, therefore, it is imperative to adhere to the rules of courtesy and decency. All rules listed in the student handbook will be followed in this classroom. Cell phones are not allowed in the classroom. If one is in my sight during a test, the student will receive a 0 on the test and the phone will be taken to the office. Please pass paper, pencils, etc. to other students. I do not want anything thrown in the classroom because accidents may occur. Absolutely no form of harrassment will be tolerated in this classroom and the student will be immediately reported to the office. "Respect" is the main rule to remember in this classroom. I will respect you and your opinions. You will respect me as the teacher. You will respect your classmates and their opinions. If we work together, we will have a great year.
