Tuesday, November 24th and Monday, November 30th Students spent the period doing Virtual Meteorology. It is due next class. Scroll down to the bottom of this page and open the Virtual Meteorology file so you can easily get to the websites you need. Assignment: Finish Virtual Meteorology for next class. Friday, November 20th and Monday, November 23rd After the devotion, students had a little time to finish the essay questions from the Major Test - Land Resources. We spent the rest of the period working on Notes - Meterology. Assignment: 1) Begin answering questions - Weather and Climate 2) I handed out the Virtual Meterology Lab that students will do in class next Tuesday/Monday after Thanksgiving. I did this because it will take over an hour to do. You will have class time next class to do it, but I handed it out early so students could work on it when they had time. It is due on Tuesday/Wednesday of the week after Thanksgiving. Note - the Word File is attached below. You will want to open the file and work from it so you can click and open the links easily, but your answers need to be on the handout provided. Wednesday, November 18th and Thursday, November 19th After the devotion, I returned the Daily Quiz - Forest Resources and we went over it. The rest of the period was spent taking the Major Test - Land Resources. Assignment: Read Chapter 5 in the textbook Monday, November 16th and Tuesday, November 17th After the devotion, I check the Study Guide in Periods 3 and 5 (I had already done that in 2nd period) and we went over them. Students also e-mailed me their answer to the potential essay questions for the Land Use Test and we then went over them. The rest of the period was spent taking the Daily Quiz - Forest Resources. Assignment: Study for the Major Test - Land Use. This started with the Tragedy of the Commons Activity, you then have Notes - Land Resources, a chart on Key Land Use Legislation and Figures, you have Daily Quizzes, and article and questions on When a Tree Falls Illegally, a powerpoint and Cornell Notes on Forest Resources, and notes on The Healthy Forest Initiative. I will also ask you review questions over the things we have put on our review list so far. Thursday, November 12th and Friday, November 13th After the devotion, we added thing over layers of rocks and fossils to our review list. Next, we reviewed and finished the Forest Resources Slides. After that, we opened the Notes - Healthy Forest Initiative attached at the bottom of this web page and discussed the Healthy Forest Initiative and National Fire Plan. In 2nd period, we also had time to go over the Study Guide - Forest Resources. Although we had planned to have a daily quiz today, we didn't make it, so we will have it next class. Assignment: 1) Download the file - Land Use Potential Discussion Questions attached below and answer them, either on your laptop or on paper. 2) Read through all review materials as well as all materials pertaining to Land Use. 3) Study for a Daily Quiz next class and a Major Test on Wednesday/Thursday next week. Tuesday, November 10th and Wednesday, November 11th After the devotion, I returned the Reading Quiz - Forest Management and Sustainability and we went over it. Next, we added things to our review list over types of rocks and the rock cycle. We also reviewed the Land Resources Material. We then worked on Cornell Notes for Forest Resources. Assignment: Finish Study Questions - Forest Resources and study for a Daily Quiz - Forest Resources and anything else over Land Use and the review list that we have covered. Friday, November 6th and Monday, November 9th After the devotion, we went over "When a Tree Falls Illegally In the Woods", took the Reading Quiz - Forest Sustainability and Management, added things about plate tectonics to our "APES Review" and started Notes - Forest Resources. Assign: Start Study Questions - Forest Resources. You can't do all of them, just what we covered in class. Wednesday, November 4th and Thursday, November 5th After the devotion, we turned in the homework - When a tree falls illegally in the wood, we wrote and graded the grazing essay, finished notes on Land Use, and re-did the Land Allocation activity. Assign: Read pages 193 - 207 in the textbook. I invite you to take notes which you may use on the reading quiz next class. Monday, November 2nd and Tuesday, November 3rd After the devotion, we started a running sheet of Review Questions where we will add things each day. Today we reviewed metric prefixes and doing metric conversions. Next, I returned the Lorax and we went over it. I also returned the Daily Quiz - Land Use Key Legislation and Figures, but since almost everyone made 100, we did not go over it. Next on the agenda, I posted a potential Land Use free-response question #1 and we walked through it, discussing the answers. If you were absent, the prompt is attached below. You will want to see another student or me to fill in what we talked about in the class discussion over the question because I am giving you the same question for a quiz next class and you will have to write your answer in paragraph form. Next, we took Land Use Daily Quiz #3 and finally worked on Land Use Notes covering silviculture and types of tree cutting. Assignment: 1) Read the article "When a Tree Falls Illegally in the Forest and answer the questions and 2) Be ready to write a free-response paragraph over the Essay #1 prompt from class today. Wednesday, October 28th and Thursday, October 29th After the devotion, I returned the Land Use Daily Quiz #1 and we corrected it. The Lorax homework was due and we turned it in. We had a short review and took the quiz over Land Use Key Legislation and Figures, we continued to work on Notes - Land Use, and we started a Land Allocation Activity. Assign: Study all notes and assignments for Land Use for Daily Quiz #3. Monday, October 26th and Tuesday, October 27th After the devotion, we had a short review and took Land Use Quiz #1 over the material we covered last time in class. Next, we went of the questions from Excerpts from Sand County Almanac as well as Land Use Key Figures and Legislation. The rest of the period was spent reading The Lorax. Assignment: Answer the questions to The Lorax. The powerpoint is attached below. Also, study Land Use Key Figures and Legislation for a quiz next class. Wednesday, October 21st and Thursday, October 22nd After the devotion, we did an activity called "Tragedy of the Commons" and answered questions about it. You should understand the concept well enough to disucuss what it is, why it happens, and what can be done to help the situation. We also turned in the homework - Land Use Key Figures and Legislation, either in hard copy or by e-mail. We then began Notes - Land Use. If you were absent, you will need to pick up a copy of the handout and get it filled in to the point where we stopped. Assignment: Study the Notes - Land Use that we have done so far and be prepared for a quiz. Monday, October 19th and Tuesday, October 20th After the devotion, students read a series of Excerpts from Sand County Alamanac by Aldo Leopold and answered questions and then researched Key Figures and Legislation related to Land Use. Assignment: Finish Key Figures and Legislation assignment if not finished during class. Thursday, October 15th and Friday, October 16th Major Test - Soils. No assignment. Tuesday, October 13th and Wednesda, October 14th Tuesday was a regular day but Wednesday was PSAT testing day, so students were only here 33 minutes. The Potential Free Response Questions were due and we went over as much of them as we could. I returned the Soil Vocabulary Quiz and we went over it, and in 2nd and 3rd, we went over the Soil Study Guide. Assign: Study for Major Test - Soils next class. Friday, October 9th and Monday, October 12th After the devotion, we worked on finishing lab, we reviewed, we took the Soil Vocabulary Quiz, and we went over the questions - Nitrogen and Phosphorous Cycles. We also worked on outlining the Nitrogen Cycle for discussion. Assignment: I epmailed students a copy of potential Free Response Questions for Soils and the assignment is to answer them. Wednesday, Oct. 7th and Thursday, Oct. 8th After the devotion, we corrected the Soil Vocabulary, we took notes on Shelford's Law of Tolerance, we did lab prep and began the Soil Macronutrient Lab. 5th period actually finished the lab. Assignment: 1) Study for a Daiy Quiz - Soil Vocabulary. 2) Finish Lab Questions - Soil Macronutrient Lab Friday, Oct. 2nd and Tuesday, Oct. 6th After the devotion, I took up the Questions - Nitrogen and Phosphorus Cycle. I also returned Soil Daily Quiz #1 and we corrected it. Next, I passed out the lab for next class and we looked at the acid rain map. We then finished discussing the Dyknow notes on Soils and added to our Cornell Notes on Soils. Assignment: 1) You must bring a soil sample for lab next class 2) Read and Highlight the Macronutrient Lab!!!! Wednesday, Sept. 30th and Thursday, Oct. 1st First, students finished their Soil Study Guide and turned it in. Next, in small groups, they did Famine in the Sahel. There is a handout and a case study that go with this, so if you were absent, see Ms. B. Finally, you were to do Questions - The Nitrogen Cycle and the Phosphorus Cycle. It is a handout. See Ms. B for a copy if you were absent. Monday, Sept. 28th and Tuesday, Sept. 29th After the devotion, finishing touches were put on the Soil Lab and they were turned in. I also took up the Vocabulary - Soils. After a short review, we took Soil Daily Quiz #1. The rest of the period we spent talking about soil horizons, soil profiles, and erosion, using both Dyknow and Cornell notes Assignment: Continue working on Study Guide - Soils Thursday, Sept. 24th and Friday, Sept. 25th We finished the Soil Texture Lab and worked on Soil Vocabulary. Assignment: Study for a Daily Quiz over the Cornell Notes - Soils, so far. Soil Labs are due next class as well as the Soil Vocabulary. Tuesday, Sept. 22nd and Wednesday, Sept. 23rd After the devotion, I returned the Third Rock From the Sun Tests and we went over them. The rest of the period was spent working on the Soil Textures Lab. I also passed out a note handout on soils along with a vocabulary assignment. Assignment: 1) Do the Soil Vocabulary exercise 2) Study your Cornell Notes on Soils so far for a quiz on Monday/Tuesday. If you are not going to be in class on Thursday, your group must come in on your own time to finish the lab. Friday, Sept 18th and Monday, Sept. 21st After the devotion, we spent the period working on Notes - Soils. Assignment: 1) Start doing the Study Guide - Soils 2) Read pages 67 - 70 AND pages 278 - 283. Stop at Green Revolution. Wednesday, Sept 16th and Thursday, Sept. 17th: After the devotion, we took the Test - Third Rock From The Sun. Assignment: None - you get a break tonight Monday, Sept. 14th and Tuesday, Sept. 15th After the devotion, we turned in the Study Guide - Third Rock From the Sun and then had 15 minutes to finish the group Geologic Time Lines. I then returned the Daily Quiz - Plate Tectonics and Rock Cycle and we corrected them. Next, we drew a time line in notes and put in the key things that you must know for the test next class. We then looked at the power point notes on Geologic Time and Fossils and discussed the key things you need to know for the test. If you were absent, you need to copy the time line from someone. For fossils, you need to know 1) what is a fossil 2) how are fossils formed 3) how to date fossils, both relative dating and absolute dating and 4) why the fossil record is not complete. You do NOT need to know all of the different types of fossils, but you DO need to know what an index fossil is. Assignment: Study for the Major Test - Experimental Design and Third Rock From The Sun next class. There will be multiple choice questions and 4 free response discussion questions covering 1) Experimental Design 2) Plate Tectonics 3) The Rock Cycle 4) Fossils. Thursday, Sept. 10th and Friday, Sept. 11tth After the devotion, I took up the Homework - Metric Conversions. I returned the Virtual Volcano Lab and we went over it as well as the Relative Dating Exercise. After a review, we took the Daily Quiz - Plate Techtonics and Rock Cycle. Next, I opened a Dyknow session which students joined to download the Notes - Geologic Time. The rest of the period was spent starting an Geologic Time Line Activity. Assignment: 1) Study the Dyknow Notes - Geological Time. 2) Finish Study Questions - Third Rock from the Sun 3) Begin Studying for a Major Test next Wednesday/Thursday covering Experimental Design, Plate Tectonics, Rock Cycle, Geological Time, and a few metric conversions. Tuesday, Sept. 8th and Wednesday, Sept. 9th After the devotion, I returned the Ladybug Lab and the Virtual Earthquake Lab which we went over. We reviewed the process of experimental design because you need to be able to design a controlled experiment with observations, questions, hypotheses, procedures, etc. I then took up the Virtual Volcano Lab from last night. Next, we practiced doing One and Two Step Metric Conversions. Lastly, we reviewed the Rock Cycle and went through the powerpoint notes. Assignment: 1) Finish the Metric Conversions Problems 2) Do Relative Dataing Lab Part I and 3) Study for a Daily Quiz - Plate Tectonics and the Rock Cycle - No notes. Thursday, Sept. 3rd and Friday, Sept. 4th After the devotion, we turned in the Ladybug Habitat Selection Lab and the Virtual Earthquake Lab. We then reviewed Plate Tectonics and looked at a demonstration of a convection current. The rest of the period was spent doing an activity to learn the Rock Cycle and then drawing the rock cycle. Assignment: 1) Finish reading assigned last class 2) Do Virtual Volcano 3) Work on Study Questions for Third Rock From the Sun. Tuesday, Sept. 1st and Wednesday, Sept. 2nd After the devotion, I returned the Brine Shrimp Lab and we talked about the problems. I am not taking up the Ladybug Lab until next class so students can fix problems and not make the same mistakes they made on the Brine Shrimp Lab. I also returned the DQ - Metric Prefixes and we went over them. Then, we finished the notes/discussion of Plate Techtonics. The rest of the class was spent starting the Virtual Earthquake Lab. Assignment: 1) Finish/Fix the Ladybug Lab 2) Read pages 336 - 343 in your textbook and take notes as you read 3) Finish the Virtual Earthquake Lab. Friday, August 28th and Monday, August 31st After the devotion, we talked about the Ladybug Habitat Selection Lab and groups had a few minutes to exchange data. Next, we reviewed Metric Prefixes on the dry erase boards and then took a short quiz on Metric Prefixes. The rest of the period was spent working on Notes - Plate Techtonics using Dyknow. Students saved their notes. Assignment: 1) Finish Ladybug Habitat Selection Lab Report 2) Begin answering Study Questions - Third Rock From the Sun. Wednesday, August 26th and Thursday, August 27th The Brine Shrimp Lab Reports were due when students walked in the door. After the devotion, we did the Ladybug Habitat Selection Lab. Assignment: 1) Study for a Daily Quiz - Metric Prefixes and their Scientific Notation equivalents 2) Work on the Ladybug Habitat Selection Lab Report - due Tuesday/Wednesday of next week. Monday, August 24th and Tuesday, August 25th After the devotion, we worked through the Chi Square Data Analysis for the Brine Shrimp Lab and wrote our conclusions. That took most of the period. The last 20 minutes of the period was spent with each group designing a Habitat Preference Lab for Ladybugs which we will do next class. Assignment: 1) Finish the lab report for the Brine Shrimp Lab and PRINT IT OUT! It is due when you walk in the door next class. 2) Re-learn the metric prefixes and powers of 10 by using the worksheet provided. We will have a quiz over them on Friday/Monday. Thursday, August 20th and Friday, August 21st After the devotion, we tried to log on to Dyknow again. If you cannot do so and see the list of your classes, you need to see the guys in the technology department IMMEDIATELY! The rest of the period was spent doing the Brine Shrimp pH Habitat Preference Lab. Assignment: You should have all of your group's data input into your lab report and everything you have done so far typed in the lab report. We will add to it next class as we evaluate the data, make graphs and draw conclusions. Tuesday, August 18th and Wednesday, August 19th First, I assigned seats. After the devotion, using dry erase boards, students works a multiplication and a division problem without using calculators and worked out last night's homework problem while I took everyone's picture. We then went over APES Course Information and I handed out Mole Dollars. The rest of the period we spent designing an experiment to test brine shrimp preference for water pH. Assignment: Begin typing your formal lab write-up. The order is as follows: Observations, Question, Hypotheses, Materials, Procedure, Data Tables. Use the information from class to write it up. Monday, August 17th: Students received Class Rules with Lab Safety Rules on the back, a blue signature page for students and parents to verify that they have read and understand the Class Rules, Lab Safety Rules, Chemistry Course Information, Academic Honor Code, etc. Assignment: 1) Get all of the blue signature page filled out to be returned 2) Do the problem attached below.
