With witches and a goblin,

and even, a ghost!

Enjoy your candy, HAVE FUN!

It's NOVEMBER!!!

Halloween is over, and it's time to celebrate the oldest American Holiday.  Not only do we have Thanksgiving (and the wonderful Thanksgiving Break), but we will also be celebrating Veteran's Day, and conducting the annual Hearst Jog-A-Thon.  Parent Teacher conferences are also scheduled for the week of the 15th (all days are minimum days).

ART CORPS

We got to make some new art on Monday afternoon.  today we learned about lines, and how to turn them into an art project.  We used the lines to make mountains and hills, and made a landscape scene.  We learned what a horizon is.  Thanks to the parents above for teaching us a new way to draw.

DUCK AND COVER

We practiced Duck and Cover on Monday.  This is very important for our safety if there is ever an earthquake.  If one were to happen, Mrs. Applbaum would shout "Duck and Cover!"  At that point, we are to slide underneath our desks.  Then we cover our heads with one hand, and grab on to the table the leg with the other.  It is important that we are completely under our desks, and facing each other underneath, so that if there is any falling debris, it doesn't hit our faces.

When Mrs. Applbaum tells us to line up, we are to line up quietly at the door.  We will lineup across the back of the classroom, instead of by the windows, in case any of them are broken.  We will then walk out to our lineup area on the grass field.  Aiden is in charge of grabbing our red safety backpack, and closing the door behind him.  Thanks Aiden!

We line up on the grass field so that we can be safe from the buildings in case there is another earthquake or if it made any of the buildings unsafe.  We also will be letting the principal know that we are all safe and accounted for.  Mrs. Applbaum will take roll, and sent it to Mrs. Jorgensen so she knows we are ok.

We will be having a duck and cover drill this week, so this was good practice.

MAD SCIENCE

On Friday, Miss. Lunar Lexi came in to teach us about science, and some of the systems of our body.  She taught us how our circulatory, digestive, and respiratory systems work together and enable us to do everyday activities.

We learned about acids and bases, and how they can affect our digestive systems.  A student helped Miss. Lunar Lexi show how acids and bases react to each other, causing bubbles and gases that would make us burp and feel less than perfect.

Another student helped us learn that not only does our stomach have an acid called Hydrolic Acid in it, but that Citrus has another acid in it called Citric Acid.  If we mix these two together, it becomes more acidic.

Mixing two acids and a base stimulates a longer reaction with more gas and bubbles than a weaker acid would.

We also helped show that aspirin is another acid. If we are feeling sick, and we have an upset stomach, aspirin may make it worse.

Instead, as this photo shows us, we should take what is called buffered acid.  Buffered acid has a coating on it, that will help neutralize the acid in the aspirin.  This will allow the aspirin to make our symptoms go away, while not upsetting our stomachs.

We also learned about the heart, and how it pumps.  Did you know that when we are running, our heart beats about 140 times per minute?  While we are sleeping, it only beats at 60!  That is more than twice as much.

Last, we learned about the respiratory system.  This system is made up of our lungs, trachea, and diaphragm.  Miss. Lunar Lexi made a model of this system and proved to us that it isn't our lungs that do the work, it is our diaphragm.  The diaphragm moves up and down, which causes our lungs to fill and empty with oxygen, which goes through our trachea.

We were all able to make our own models, which Gemma and Abby are showing now.  As they pull on the large balloon (diaphragm), air is pulled through the straw (trachea), and fills our small balloon (lung).
