Be an Active Learner!!!! **Understand the meaning of every word you read. Vocabulary knowledge is the key to success in high school. Look for patterns in words (prefixes, suffixes and roots). Also use context clues before or after the word to determine a word's meaning. **Study uninterrupted for at least 30 minutes. It is essential you can concentrate for extended periods of time. **Establish a schedule for studying-and stick to it. (When you are most able to be alert) **Simulate exam conditions when studying. **Time yourself when doing practice questions. Learn to move to the next question after a reasonable time frame has passed. **Concentrate your study time in your weakest areas. **Improve your memory by using the following techniques: -Concentrate! Get away from distractions and think deeply -Set goals - Decide what you will do and how you will achieve ( I want an A on the English test, I will study 1 hour and take 2 breaks) -Imagery - Visualize pictures in a text -Make Associations - link info, find similarities/differences -Organize Information - Webs, notes, highlighting, etc. -Recite information -Write and relate information -Mnemonics - (HOMES = Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) -Review - Study on Tuesday, review on Wednesday
