TRIMESTER 2 EXAM SUMMARY IS NOW POSTED IN MY CLASSROOM NEWS!
Welcome to the ISMET 4th Grade Website
Welcome to the ISMET fourth grade website! My name is Katie Escobar and I am pleased to be your child’s fourth grade teacher. This is my 6th year teaching at ISMET, and I remember when many of the current fourth graders were in preschool, masha Allah. I look forward to getting know each and every one of my new students, as well as serve as a guide to their educational enrichment, insha Allah.
CLASS WEBSITE
One of the most important elements in establishing and maintaining a positive relationship between the teacher, parent, and student is communication. One method of staying informed about what is going on in and out of the classroom is this website.
The website is a useful tool that will keep you connected with our class. If you click on the Homework link on the left side of this screen, you will that the Homework page is set up a little differently than last year. Homework will be posted by class, and you can click and scroll down to choose a specific class. You can also click on My Calendar and homework will appear on there as well. Click on the assignment and you can read a detailed description of the assignment, see when it was posted, and when it is due. Check in with the calendar to see important due dates and events as well. . Classroom News will be posted biweekly to keep you updated on what your child is learning.
There are many other features available and I will continuously add on to it throughout the year. I like to think that the site is continuously under construction! Feel free to browse the website and become familiar with all that it offers. *For those who do not have immediate access to internet at home will be given print-outs of newsletters.*
HOMEWORK
Instead of packets, homework will be assigned on a nightly basis. Typically, assignments will be due in two days or later. There will be some assignments that will be due the following day. The homework load may be more than what the students are used to, but there will be designated times in the class for the kids to work on homework and projects. As your child’s teacher, I make it my responsibility to make sure no time is wasted in class, and that help will always be available when needed.
Homework planners are required for each student, and were placed on the school supply list. It is a useful tool to be used throughout the year to keep track of assignments and important dates. I always tell my students that the website is there to help remind them of assignments, and it is not a scapegoat for forgetting homework. “It wasn’t on the website!” is not an acceptable excuse for missing homework.
UNIFORM
Make sure to send you child to school every day in their uniform – see page 17 in the ISMET Student handbook for guidelines. I want to stress that open toed shoes, shoes with a raised heel of more than an inch, sandals, and flip-flops are not allowed. Also, make sure to purchase the MET sweater from Dennis Uniform before the weather gets colder. This is the only jacket the students may wear indoors. They may wear a raincoat or other heavy jacket outside when needed.
Since 4th grade girls are not required to wear hijab or long sleeve shirts as part of their uniform, they must have a hijab and their MET jacket on hand to wear during salah. Keep one hijab at school at all times, and make sure they come with their MET jacket every day so they are always prepared for salah.
SNACK TIME AND LUNCH
Snack and lunch time is supervised by each grade's homeroom teacher. This allows me to have more personal time with the class and establish a closer bond with them throughout the year. We will be eating either in the classroom, lunchroom, or outside – depending on the weather.
Please pack a healthy lunch for your child. Donuts, candy bars, and other sweets are packed with sugar that can affect your child’s behavior and disrupt the class. Junk food will be confiscated if it becomes a chronic issue at snack/lunch time.
Sometimes a child will forget their lunch, and classmates will want to help by offering food they have brought from home. Although it is a very kind gesture, sharing food is prohibited per the ISMET Student Handbook (page 18). If your child has forgotten their lunch, they will be asked to call home to have someone bring it. Please bring lunches to the office. They will make sure that it gets to your child.
VOLUNTEERS
ISMET/OIA requires that each family do 25 hours of volunteer work at the school. A volunteer sign-up sheet was included in your Orientation packet that was distributed at the Parent Orientation in August. I am more than happy to think of ways you can help inside and out of the classroom.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask! You may contact me by scheduling a meeting through the office, or via email at katiee@metpdx.org.
May Allah bless you and your family!
Jazakallah Kheir,
Teacher Katie
