Subtracting is going as well as I would like-some students are struggling so we will stay with it for an extra week and then move on. It may help to practice with your child at home. We will also learn about time by practicing time to half hour, quarter hour and time to 5 minutes. Language Arts: I will continue reading "Tale of Despereaux." They are loving it! It's a fictional story about a mouse and a princess. I'll save the details for your children to tell you. We will continue with our writing workshops. We will do more shared writing where we all write a story together on chart paper. They give ideas and sentences, titles and I write. It's good for them to see the writing process. We reread our story, make changes together. I will write the final draft on the computer and send them home for you to read. It's fun! I will also help them to understand Main Ideas. We will use magazine articles of their choice and work together to write one or two sentences about the article. In Grammar we will learn about helping verbs, irregular verbs and contractions. Social Studies: We will learn about the American Revolution and George Washington. We will talk about slavery and the Civil War. We will also learn about immigration and the United States expansion Science: We will learn about ramps and how they can be used to lift things. We will have experiments relating to ramps. We will also learn about forces and magnets. What is a magnet? What metals are attracted to magnets and why? A magnet has a field around it that pulls certain objects. Please feel free to email me at eileen@metpdx.org. I will return your email within 24 hours. Teacher Eileen
