Each week we read a new story in class. First I read the story aloud, and then the students take turns reading the story aloud. The second time we read it I ask them questions regarding comprehension and grammar. Math We will be covering Chapter 9: Addition and Subtraction Strategies and Facts to 20 In this chapter the emphasis is on mastering addition and subtraction facts to 20. Students use strategies and the relationship between addition and subtraction to help them commit the facts to memory. Students will need to practice their addition and subtraction facts throughout the year to have a solid background with basic facts, which is important for future success in mathematics. Please practice addition and subtraction facts with your child at home daily. I recommend using flashcards. Social Studies We will be covering Unit 5: It Happened in America The USA is part of North America and we will learn about our country's past. Children will discover that, like people, our country has a past or history Children will learn to read a time line and realize that time lines show the order in which things happen. Children will identify different Native American groups and will meet a Navajo girl who uses her scrapbook to tell about past and present Navajo ways. Children will learn about the journey of Christopher Columbus and learn about the Taino people who welcomed Columbus to America. Children will learn about settlers who came to North America after Columbus and identify Santa Fe as home to those settlers and Native Americans. Children will learn how settlers called the Pilgrims overcame harsh conditions to live in North America, and how Native Americans helped them survive. Science We will be covering Chapter 7: Pushes and Pulls In this chapter, children learn that we can determine if an object is in motion by noting any change in its position. We can also measure how fast something changes its position, or its speed. The motion of all objects is governed by Newton's three laws of motion. Objects at rest tend to stay at rest and objects in motion tend to stay in motion. In order to change the motion of any object, we must exert some force on it. Simple machines are devices made up of few or no moving parts. In general, there are two types of simple machines, levers and inclined planes. Many things are made up of parts. The sum of an object's parts is the whole. Two or more simple machines make up a compound machine. A push or pull is a force that makes things move. The body parts of living things use force to move, so they can meet their needs. Most objects and living things are made of parts that work together.
