The Ruston High Varsity Cheerleaders are responsible for promoting school spirit by leading the crowd at ball games, planning and conducting pep rallies and promoting Bearcat spirit at RHS and in the community.

Cheerleaders try out in the spring and must have a 2.0 GPA at all times. They attend camp in the summer and practice throughout the school year.

Cheerleaders Perform Well at NCA Camp in Natchitoches

The Varsity and JV Cheerleaders attended NCA camp June 1-4. The Varsity Cheerleaders won the Top Team trophy for their performance cheer. They also received the Spirit Stick and a bid to compete at NCA Senior and Junior High Nationals. Amy Cole was selected as Top All-American among all cheerleaders at camp. Eleven Varsity cheerleaders and one JV cheerleader was nominated to try out for All-American by the NCA staff. JV won the Game Day Top Team trophy. They received the Spirit Stick and a bid to compete at Nationals as well.

One of the most exciting things about camp was officially naming the Bearcat "Rusty". Anna Ward, the 2008-2009 mascot, won the Mascot Leadership Award and the Most Improved Mascot trophy. She was named to the All-American Mascot Team. Both Anna and Amy Cole have the opportunity to perform in Hawaii or Florida after being named All-Americans.  Rusty the Bearcat will be introduced at Bearcat Madness in August and teach the crowd his "Eat' em up Cats!" chant.
