Hillsboro Alternative Program
2007/2008

About the Hillsboro

Alternative Program

What makes Hillsboro’s Alternative
Program a Caring Community?
In a caring community,
people help people.

Caring Communities foster a sense of belonging and acceptance in its members.  They nurture the talents and strengths of the individuals who are part of them.

One major goal of the educational caring community is to provide wraparound services to students in crisis in effort to:

  • Help stabilize students in need through various services and agencies
  • Help children avoid becoming part of the juvenile justice system
  • Help students learn how to make good, healthy, safe, life choices and decisions, as well as acquire coping skills for life pressures and situations
  • Decrease violent, aggressive, and disruptive student outbursts in the school and community settings
  • Help students remain in school and earn a high school diploma

The Alternative Program
Learning Plan:

Students accepted into the Alternative Program are guaranteed the benefit of learning facilitated by a highly certified team of educational professionals.  Three fourths of our teachers hold advanced degrees.  Our instructors are each members of two Professional Learning Community teams.

Each teacher is a member of a core content team at Hillsboro High School.  These teams are charged with the responsibility of selecting the essential skills students will learn in their corresponding academic areas.  Content teams set learning goals, collaborate on best teaching practices, develop common assessments to measure those practices, and analyze data in order to effectively monitor student’s mastery of essential skills.

The Alternative teachers also comprise their own Interdisciplinary Team.
The goals of this team are to:

  • Identify those skills that are absolutely essential to student success, integrating meaningful learning experiences for those skills throughout all subject areas.
  • Develop effective teaching strategies which focus on critical thinking skills, organizational skills, and analyzing information and testing possible solutions.
  • Assess student mastery of essential skills, celebrating strengths and identifying and implementing improvement strategies.

A “Whatever It Takes” Approach

Studies indicate that social issues and problems such as teen pregnancy, depression, poor attendance and family dysfunction contribute greatly to the cause of students becoming at risk for school failure or dropping out.
For some of these students, larger class sizes and school settings contribute to feelings of isolation, which slows
the learning process.

The Alternative Program gives students a much needed chance to make a fresh start.

NO GOAL IS OUT OF REACH!

With the support of the school district as a whole, caring citizens in the community and the students themselves, we have to developed a unity of purpose to do “whatever it takes” to help students experience success both academically and in life
