Casting Voices is the oral history project of students at Gulfport High School.

Casting Voices is an initiative to build community and foster leadership through oral history. Over twenty Gulfport High School students are building an audio archive of their peers’ experiences and reflections. For their first project, Casting Voices is building an archive of Hurricane Katrina histories as told through the viewpoints of teenagers. The students have three goals as they go through each stage of collecting and publishing their fellow students’ histories.

Goals:

  1. To foster a sense of community through honoring students’ experiences before, during and after the storm. The act of dialogue opens possibilities for understanding, healing, and further study.
  2. To develop Casting Voices members’ leadership skills. These students will develop the skills to empathize with a broad range of people. Learning to be inquisitive, they will be active listeners who seek to understand others experiences and appreciate the complexities of each individual’s story.
  3. Students will create an historical archive that will be catalogued at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Katrina Research Center and in Gulfport High School’s collection.
  4. Casting Voices final project will be a professionally produced CD with an insert that features the strongest representations of their field recordings along with their own reflections.
